melikalani
Peace! Quite honestly, my priest-friends have told me that they prefer NOT to receive religious gifts. This is mainly because they usually receive lots of religious gifts from people who aren't particularly close to them. If you are close to him, determine what he really likes outside of his ministry. If he's diocesan, has he ever mentioned a favorite tv show or is he a good cook? Then a DVD or cookbook might be appreciated. He would probably like a gift card to his favorite store or restaurant, too. One of my priest-friends who bicycles everywhere appreciates gift cards to his favorite bike shop - while for another, I always stock him up with Starbucks gift cards! If you do give him a gift card, make sure it's for somewhere he frequents. One of my priest-friends saw that I had gone shopping at a certain store and he told me that someone gave him a gift card for that same store, but he never goes there. I told him to bring it with him next time we meet and I'd buy it from him. When we saw each other again he said that he cleaned out his "gift card drawer" and he wanted to know what other cards I could buy from him. There were cards from places that had been closed for more than FIVE years! For a dear friend who is a religious brother, I usually pre-apologize for my gift by saying, "Technically, this is for the community, but actually it's for you." Heehee! This really works with chocolate, since he never refuses! I also give him grocery store gift cards, which come in really handy for his community. hsmom... my religious brother-friend (and his community!) would probably thank me profusely for a big ol' jug of Cheer Dark Formula! Sojourner
At a Mass I attended before Christmas, the priest said he got black sweaters more often than any other gift. He said one time he moved and counted up all the black sweaters he owned -- 23. He gave 20 of them to a local seminary ... then before he left his staff gave him one as a going-away gift. Sojourner
He wears them. (for those not in the know this is our friend who is a seminarian. I am betting he will get lots of sweaters as gifts. Or cassocks. I could see him getting cassocks.)
homeschoolmom
I assumed he would live in a cassock.
