Ziggamafu
Scapulars are certainly not parto of the Deposit of Faith. Scapulars are, however, sacramentals. I personally hate how in 'folk Catholicism' it is believed that the Brown Scapular is believed to be a get-out-of-hell-free card. Becuase of this I don't feel as close to the scapular as I do to other sacramentals such as the Rosary which are not so greatly misunderstood.
The theology of sacramentals is part of the Deposit of faith. I would say that "folk Catholicism" is probably largely unaware of what the word "scapular" means, as that is something of which only the more orthodox / traditional Catholics are aware. You are free to debate the merrits of the scapular or the Luminous Mysteries if you like-- BUT NOT HERE! When someone is asking for advice or help please either offer some of leave the thread. littleflower+JMJ
Ziggamafu, I would ask a priest who was familiar with the blessings of the scapulars but I think it would work. Its sad how some people can disregard a gift from Our Blessed Mother and even call it petty! The scapular is a good sacramental to have and I'm with Zigga when I say it is something that I would not throw aside.

littleflower+JMJ
Seriously, I think people care too much about trivial things like scapulars. Does it really matter if your scapular is perfect or not? I think people should spend more time worrying about the Dogmata and Doctrines, the Sacraments, the Commandments, and the Lord's Prayer and the Angelical Salutation rather than trivial things like scapulars.
I'm just saying there are always two or three threads going on Phatmass about scapulars and I think it's kind of petty and ridiculous when there are so many more important matters to discuss.
And this reply also points out. Sorry if I read you wrong :

Ziggamafu
Could a five-fold scapular be used in place of a single brown scapular by itself for proper enrollment into the Confraternity? I know there's a kind of "blanket" investment for the five-fold that goes through each scapular. I'm wondering if, for the Confraternity of Our Lady of the Brown Scapular (that is their name, right?), the brown scapular must be worn separate from any other scapular at the time of enrollment / blessing. Anyone know for sure?
