alicemary
As an adult you have an obligation to try and protect your children any way that you can. Some parents do not allow their children to get any vaccines, down right crazy to me. I don't know where they get the vaccine, nor do I frankly care. You should care more about your child then your feelings. And you can become quite sick with chicken pox, what would you think about yourself if your child became deathly ill? It kind of comes down to what you feel is best for your child.

IcePrincessKRS
My kids got it... I think its kind of stupid (to make little kids get it.. I can see the point for older children and adults), but its required in NY so they got pretty much everything. (Apparently NY has the strictest vax requirements in the US, or pretty darn near the strictest... with the possibility of going to Korea in the future we thought it better to get it than not in the long run.) missionseeker
doesn't only last for about ten years anyway? That meanse they could gett it when they are older, which is worse.
prose
Well, when I consulted my doctor about it, he said two things. one: it doesn't actually immunize the child completely. It only makes it less serious if they do get chicken pox. and two: That it is far more important to get males immunized than females. I feel that I have pretty well done my research on this. I have the full support of our family physician. I would not feel awful if she got the chicken pox, or even if it was serious (well, I would feel awful that she was seriously ill, but I wouldn't take the blame for it), because I did everything in my power to make an informed decision about this. And by the way, just because I feel this decision was right for me, I don't believe that for everyone. Different circumstances call for different family decisions. That is what being a parent is all about.

Sojourner
I think the vaccine was available when I was a kid but I didn't get the vaccine, but I did get chicken pox. I remember being sick for several days ... I think I read "The Youngest Conquistador" when I was ill. Not a book I'd recommend letting an 8-year-old read, even a very sick one. Sojourner
I don't know about fertility, but I do know it can be dangerous for a pregnant woman to get it. I know this because one of my former co-workers got it as an adult, and had to stay home for two weeks to avoid any possibility of infecting a pregnant co-worker (not me). but my male co-worker who had it went on to father three children ... so everything seems to be in working order. [/quote] That's a lovely complement Raph, but I don't know anything about fertility issues etc surrounding the vaccines. I do know about the ethics of tainted vaccines. I believe there are a few other threads on this on the board that cover it pretty well....
