prose
Am I crazy? I know that the Vatican said it was okay, but something didn't sit right with me making a vaccine from diploid cells.

MissScripture
I just don't understand the point. Unless she gets older and never gets the chicken pox, I just don't see the reason in getting one. But how is the vaccine made? I just never paid much attention past the part where I think it's stupid that they bothered...
avemaria40
I had the shot when I was little but I agree, chicken pox doesn't kill you. You get a bad case of them once, you rarely ever get it again. Though they might worry about kids, especially boys getting them as adults, for reasons I don't feel are appropriate to discuss on a public forum.
I dont know how they are MADE, but vaccines are basically less harmful virus or bacteria of the type of sickness you are trying to avoid. That way your body can build amunity to it and when the REAL thing comes along, you can fight it off with your antibodies and not get sick! YAY! or something like that... I never got the vaccine, I had to get chicken pox the hard way. Edited February 3, 2007 by CrossCuT
Well, Chicken Pox isn't always just a few days of itchiness.... My friends' dad lost an eye to a severe case. My two older ones were vaccinated against it, but HStot got it and HSdaughter ended up getting it (mild case) anyway.

If you get teh chicken pox it is unlikely that you will ever get them again. HOWEVER, you are at risk of getting shingles because chicken pox is a retro-virus and never really goes away. Thus it can and does come back leter in life as shingles.
Lterrebrood
I think this is just one of those things thatyou have to decide. I'm sure it's required for good reasons, such as the well being of children and their fellow classmates.
prose
They are made from human embryos... Well even before that. diploid cells they are called. They are when the cells of a human afer conception has divided. So basically from aborted babies.

prose
To date, there are 5 vaccines that use aborted babies as part of the manufacturing process: Rubella, as found in the M-M-R®II, the M-R-Vax®II, the Meruvax®II, and the Biavax®II; Poliovax® inactivated vaccine for Polio; Varivax® Varicella Virus Vaccine Live, for Chicken Pox; Imovax® Rabies ID, Wistar Rabies Virus Strain PM-1503-3M Vaccine (and the rabies immune globulin); and the newly recommended Havrix® Inactivated for Hepatitis A. The Varicella Zoster (chickenpox) vaccine is made from the Oka/Merck strain of live attenuated (weakened) varicella virus. The virus was initially obtained from a child with natural varicella, introduced into human embryonic lung cell cultures, adapted to and propagated in embryonic guinea pig cell cultures, and finally propagated in human diploid cell cultures. The vaccine contains sucrose, phosphate, glutamate and processed gelatin as stabilizers.
http://www.909shot.com/Diseases/chickenpox%20facts.htm Edited February 3, 2007 by prose

beata_virgo_maria
I had the chicken pox shot when I was 11 or so, when it first came out and wasn't aware of the abortion link. (If I had know they would have probably had to have sedated me to give me the shot, lets just say I was very pro-life even then, and a little bit rambunctious.) They recommended that I get a booster of the shot, because they are finding that it doesn't last for very long. As I am now legally an adult, I replied that I will get a booster if they make one that didn't play a role in the killing of an unborn child.
