When I cited ecumenism, I meant genuine ecumenism. On your latter point, I believe you have a point! St. Jerome's Vulgate is an extremely authoritative and trustworthy text, in no small measure due to the fact that many of the Hebrew and Greek texts which Jerome worked from were older than the Hebrew and Greek texts that Biblical scholars currently possess. Sadly, we've lost them, but in the Vulgate they at least live on in some way. Anyone who rejects the Vulgate as a central text in Biblical studies doesn't know what they're talking about.
