My great-grandmother was AMerican but married a Canadian and lived there until she died. But her son, my grandfather, moved to the States and lived here until he died.

I've been there once - Calgary during the Stampede. I liked the long days - the sun didn't set until 10 or 10:30. And I liked the great-aunt I stayed with.

It's alright, too expensive though. Once it hit parity with the US dollar, prices became totally outrageous. Not just my opinion either, the Canadian businessman next to me on my last flight back from Toronto had to give me an economics lecture that took our entire 45 minute wait on the tarmac I don't remember it all, I just remember that it was cheaper for him to import his luxury car from the US than to buy it in Canada itself by thirty thousand dollars.

I almost never ran into the stereotype of the arrogant Canadian (nor the too nice to be real Canadian). A friend did take me to the Royal Museum though, which was amesome. It was a Wednesday afternoon or something so students got in free with ID, and the staff pretty much said my US student ID counted as far as they were concerned.

I love Canada. I lived in Montreal for awhile and then Edmonton.

If you are so close to Seattle, do you ever go to Shaw Island in the San Juan Islands and visit the Benedictine monastery there? If you don't have many Catholics near you, maybe you could go for a retreat to the monastery every now and then - or just go to work the land with them for a holiday?

I think Canada gets teased by the US in a way similar to the New Zealanders getting teased by the Australians. You both have a larger country next door and so seem to be in their shadow. But Canada is great, just as NZ is!

I cant stand Canada or Canadians. First of all who puts a stupid leaf on their flag, that should be warning enough that you are about to enter dorky territory. Then they spend half the year sitting on their frozen bottoms drinking beer and complaining about the US. Get a life.

What you didn't get is the flip side. :D During the winter the sun is setting by 5 and rising again around 9:00.
