If this had been for you, what would you have done differently? How'd I do? Feedback appreciated. :D:

(I'm looking to start another in about two weeks, which is why I'm asking. No point in doing it again if it isn't going to improve.)

this one does not. that is something i definitely want to do with the next one. it would not have been hard to put feet on this one, but my sister didn't want any. (it's already a tight space. she wanted to save all the room she could.)

for the next one i want to work with legs and a bottom trim. i'm also thinking small rosettes and thick moulding (can't remember the exact style name). the top can also have an arch carved into it.

it kinda looks like it belongs on top of a dresser (again, i've forgotten the name of that piece) so i've also considered building a bottom for it.

also, what do you think about making two drawers for the bottom (to stack on top of each other)? would that be too much?

You need to add something to the bottom to balance the top which looks a bit big because of the arch. Right now the piece is not balanced. Could you have three shelves which would make it look taller? Or put a cross piece across the bottom to make it look like a more important bottom?

I could certainly add another shelf. We're also thinking about drawers. I think if I build out the bottom with a casing w/moulding, it'd look more balanced.

Great advice. Thanks, cmom! ^_^

You definitely are talented.
I like the baskets you have instead of drawers, but I would have three across to increase your storage. You could also put a same size arch at the bottom of this one to cover a set of feet.
On the next one make the arch smaller about the same relative size as the bottom molding.

Will do. I think I'm going to work on a desk before I try to tackle another bookcase, but I will definitely pull this up again when I start the next one.

Thank you again!! ^_^

I like CMom's suggestion of putting in three shelves.
I also thought maybe you could put doors on the bottom?

Doors, eh? Might be a little tricky on this one considering the room I have to work with on the face of it.. but it's definitely a possibility for the future!

VERY nice! I had no idea you were a carpenter too

Only thing I would have done differently is to stain the wood instead of painting it. But that's just me - I LOOOVE seeing the woodgrain, especially on birch or cherry.

I wish I could build my own furniture... they make it look so easy and quick on TV... I think it would look cool if there was a 'second story' shelf on the top... kinda like a cupboard... kinda hard to explain... much easier to draw and show you...

I'd have to ditto about the stain... I love a dark red stain (not blood!) to the wood.

I don't like the baskets too much, myself; they look out of place the way you did it. If you put three across like cmom said as drawers, it might work, though. You did a great job on the edges (bevels? Both of my grandfathers are carpenters, and my dad's father specializes in furniture and I haven't sucked up a lot of his knowledge...). I'm not too much of a fan of that arch. It seems to visually dominate the piece, I think. You need a bigger TV on there ;)

It was made for my sister so she got to choose whether it would be stained or painted. She chose to paint. But, as I said before, I would like to stain them in the future.

The arch, I don't think, will be too dominant if I balance it out as cmom suggested. A simple casing would solve a lot of this problem.

Oh! And about the baskets: my sister will indeed be getting more. She will also use this space for dance shoes and extra books. :)
