So phamily, here's the deal. I have an undergrad degree in English and had a secondary teaching cert that I never used. I subbed, got a job in an IT company for the summer and have been there 12 years come July.

I obtained my Master's degree from the University of Phoenix almost three years ago. Sheesh, that's hard to believe. Anyway, I have a Master's in Organizational Management.

So, my question is this: Should I apply to teach for the University of Phoenix online? Considerations are as follows: I'm a mother to a 3 year old, have a full time job, ... oh, and I'm a wife too.

Teaching part time would limit me to one class that is usually is about six weeks in length. There is no guarantee that I would be given back to back classes, and there could be breaks in class load.

I just feel like I need to be doing something else with my degrees besides Risk and Issue management for the Navy/MC.

Anyway .. what say you pham?

I know someone who teaches there and also takes care of her disabled son and is a wife. If you PM me, I can possibly have her email you if you like. She's a really sweet person, very much filled with Christ's love. She also one of the people who helped me as I was converting. :)

No, no set time every day, because its online. I would estimate probably needing 10-15 hours a week to devote to this.

Basically yes, there really is not class time per se, its all done on message board type format, with threads.

SRMiller - thank you, I believe I'll take you up on that, look for a PM from me soon.

I also have a friend who teaches there, and she's given me some of the ins and outs too.

Thanks so much for your help so far guys.

How many students will you have?

My experience with teaching is that it always takes longer than you think it will....

Also, how important is it to you to look your students in the eye? I depend on visual clues from my students to know if they're "getting it" when I teach and to guide my lectures....

And yes, of course, pray! :saint:

I may have missed this, but have you taught before? Have you taught this subject before? The first time teaching a class always takes up more time because you have to prep everything from scratch...

Lots of good questions ...

I have taught before. Although, technically, it was as a student teacher, sub, and corporate trainer. I was corporate trainer for about 3 years. And have since facilitated classes.

As a graduate of the online course, I've found that its not necessarily imperative to look a student in the eye, and find that at least at the collegiate level that taking an online course can force participation (at least at U of P where participation is mandatory). I do agree that when I taught face to face, visual clues were very very important.

As to the subject I'd be teaching, it would be something that I do on a daily basis in my current job. Leadership skills, change management, risk management etc. I do know that U of P has a mentoring program for new teachers that help you get through your first class.

I've thought about trying for a job at the local community college, but I think given my life circumstances, I would be better off in the online environment, since it can go where I go.

I don't know. I love how U of P is structured towards students who are returning to school, or already have full time jobs.

Lots to think about .. thanks
