I do not mean to make a plug for my college, but it has the most renown education program in the lower 48. Essentially if you have an education degree from the College of St. Scholastica you are looked at pretty highly. I am a secondary education person here, but the elementary has it's own program. Many of our students who graduate with a teaching degree will be able to find a job quickly, especially if you move out of Minnesota after school. Drawback, Scholastica is a private school. Catholic by name, not so much by practice, but students are trying to work to change that. Tuition generally runs about $27,000 with room and board. About $18,000 minus room and board, including books and stuff. Scholarships are available, and the student body is relatively small with a 13:1 student teacher ratio.

Any other questions let me know, shameless plug over. :spam:

Also, I don't want to be mean to other schools this is just what my fiancee went through. He was trying to get a degree from St. Cloud State. He transfered in from Scholastica and was told by the officals at St. Cloud that he had all his generals. Now he is sitting three credits short plus he needs a phy ed class. Also he has said that the instructors really didn't care about his opinions or views on the topics. I have also heard this from other friends who have gone to St. Cloud.

You can always find partiers and always find serious students. You just have to pick who you'll hang out with.

I apologize in advance, I know this is going to offend... but in my experience St. Cloud State and Mankato are not generally well respected academically. St. Thomas, even though it has some partiers (!), does have a well respected education program and a Catholic identity (double major in Catholic Studies it is SO fun and you can live in Rome!). Bethel University also has a well respected education program (in Arden Hills, a suburb of St. Paul).

Why did you not tell me this when I was looking at colleges? That was one of my choices!

I've gotten a lot of mixed reviews on SCSU. I know a lady who used to teach English there...if you can get into the right classes and know the right people, you're golden. If not...it could go either way.
Coming out of my highschool, honestly, going to SCSU was looked down upon, but mostly because the people from our class who went there were the ones who were partiers and just going to college because mom and dad wanted them to. However, I've herad good things about it from other people who have gone there. I haven't heard a real consensus one way or the other.

SCSU is actually quite well known for their education progam. I guess they're fairly innovative. (But no, your saying that doesn't actually offend me.)
I think she was looking at public schools because they're cheaper...St. Thomas is by not cheap!

hehe yes cheap is the key word...I am currently at College of Saint Mary (link) where it is 25k/year for tuition + room and board. It has an EXCELLENT education program, however, is inconvienently located not-in-Minnesota.

It's a 900-person school, all women. I'm looking for a bigger school, different experience. There are a lot of partiers here at CSM, too. They generally don't bring the parties back to the dorms (no male guests overnight) but there is a lot of drinking here...

When I transfer out, I will be sitting at 93 semester credits...I don't know how my education classes will transfer :(

BTW, I was just looking for a part time job in St. Cloud :)

I'm also hear poor outlooks for finding a teaching job in Minnesota :ohno:

:o SCSU does not have an early childhood education major, which means like this whole semester is POINTLESS (I'm taking 4 ECE classes at the moment...)

Okay, and another question....my mom lives in MN (since 08/2005) and I moved up for the summer in 05/2006...I moved back to NE for school, but do I qualify for residency? I am sooo confused...

As for teaching jobs.... That goes up and down, it seems-- a glut of jobs... then nothing... When I was in college, MN and WI were teacher export states.

Really? That stinks. I really wanted to get out and teach in like the Twin Cities area...are they looking for special education teachers?

The more and more I think about, the more I maybe just wanna sit and stay a year and a half and finish up my education degree here....I mean I'm 96 credits in, with only like 30 - 40 more to go...
