God is the new Marx in Latin America

In May, Benedict XVI will travel to Brazil to attend the Fifth General Conference of Latin American and Caribbean Bishops. In doing so, he will be visiting a continent in which Christianity is in a state of flux. It is a continent in which politicians are increasingly anxious to associate themselves with Christianity, even when identifying the Church as a major obstacle to their agendas.

Added to this complication are liberation theology's dissolution into irrelevance and the rise of Protestant sects throughout the region

Marxist protestantism is incredibly common in the evangelical community.

Father Jonathan of Fox News Channel had an interesting column relating to this. This is the link. I find it very disturbing.

Weird. Do they follow Marx on his view of God and religion? What about the family? Dialectical materialism? The human person?

I've studied Marx's writings and in my opinion if one wants to be identified as a Marxist there is not much room for picking and choosing. There is no such thing as Christian Marxism or Marxist Christianity (IMHO). There may be forms of Christian thinking heavily influenced by Marxism, but I doubt enough actual Marxism still exists to warrant the name. Or possibly the reverse would be true, there is not enough Christianity intact to warrant the designation. In any case I can't imagine authentic Christianity coexisting with authentic Marxism. :idontknow:
