Diet Strategies That Really Work

Enough with the dieting advice. Here is what actually worked for 99 percent of 5,000 people who lost weight and kept off at least 30 pounds of it.

Count calories.

Researchers identified these “big losers” using newspaper and magazine ads, according to a new study published in the Mayo Clinic Health Letter. The average weight loss in the group was 72 pounds.

The successful dieters had various methods for counting and controlling their intake of calorie and fat grams, such as restricting their intake of certain foods and eating smaller portions.

More than 90 percent of the participants exercised regularly, mostly walking or doing something else to sweat out the equivalent of a one-hour brisk walk.

And forget about skipping breakfast. Bad plan if you want to succeed. Nearly 80 percent of the losers ate breakfast daily, usually cereal and fruit.

Frequent visits to the scale helped, too—75 percent weighed in at least weekly.

Keeping it off once the weight was lost amounted to maintaining these behavior changes and responding quickly when the pants started to feel tight again. Those who noticed and addressed it quickly when weight crept ever-so-slightly back on again were most likely to stop or reverse the gain.

The dieters who managed to keep off the weight for at least two years halved their risk of putting it all back on again.

Counting calories is completely and totally unnecessary, so is weighing yourself every week.

Complex carbohydrates is the answer, so is measuring your waist line every month. Oh yeah.. and did I mention that you should exercise 30-40 minutes every day? Yah, helps big time.

In Christ I Trust

I think it's good advice. I've lost over 70 pounds being somewhat of a nazi when it comes to calorie intake. I walk 30 minutes a day as well.

Of course prayer was incredibly important in controlling my will power. I actually used the first 3 steps of alcoholics anonymous. 1) Admit you are powerless over (food in this case). 2) Recognize God can remove this defect of character. 3) Humbly ask him to remove said defects.

It really worked for me! I quickly lost my desire for junk food. I learned how to cook healthy meals for myself as well and made smart decisions when I had to eat out.

You can do it, just takes effort like all good things do.

Other solutions that are working well for my roomies and myself are to 1) be too poor to buy food; 2) be too poor to do anything but walk and take buses around the city or bike; 3) work too much because you're poor. We've all lost weight (I've stayed the same abouts, but I'm small) since we moved in!

I am not a big calorie-counter (who am I kidding? I've never counted a calorie a day in my life), but I really found weekly weigh-ins to be helpful, especially in post-partum months. The things you use in NFP charting can be big indicators of how your health is and fluctuating weight can be a big factor in that (example: a friend of mine has had major thyroid problems since having her first baby and monitors all that stuff to help keep better track of how her thyroid levels are fluctuating or staying normal, her weight is a huge indictor of changes). I find the measuring tape more depressing than the scale. lol

I lost 10 about pounds during my first semester of college because of not eating for various reasons. Am not happy about it either!

My siblings were all jumping on my scale last night to see how much they weighed. They were pretty upset to find out that it measures 6lbs heavier. lol

Great site for grossing out over parasites. But actually the Colonix program really works for people.

In other news....
Does the WeightWatchers program of counting and using points work as well as counting you're talking about?
