MrsFrozen
If someone goes to Mass and knows all the responses but doesn't say any of them, are they still fulfilling their obligation? Thank you. God bless. :)
cappie
When I was a child the first commandment or precept of the church was to "hear" Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligations. There was no ability of participate as we know it now unless you were an altar boy. The current Code of Canon Law says in Can 989: "Christ's faithful are to hold the blessed Eucharist in the highest honour. They should take an active part in the celebration of the most august Sacrifice of the Mass..." "Sunday . . . is to be observed as the foremost holy day of obligation in the universal Church" (CIC, can. 1246 § 1). "On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass" (CIC, can. 1247). I suppose it would depend on your definition of active participation!!! Depending on the age and disposition of the person concerned, there may be a real need for catechises.
