Aloysius
has anyone sought to undertake a compilation of only infallible statements? i know it's easy to find infallible teaching, look to the Catechism and what not, but i'd like to have a source containing only infallible quotes
Laudate_Dominum
The closest thing I can think of off hand is Ludwig Ott's book Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma, I believe Tan Books publishes it. It goes through Church teachings and has dogmatic quotes with good background comments and theological commentary.
Aloysius
that looks good. i should get myself a copy. but i'd also like to see a topic by topic compilation of Ex Cathedra statements, it'd be cool. it'd be a lot of work siftin through papal stances on certain issues, but i think it'd be wrth it. anyone know of anything like that? but the Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma 1 is also definitely a good one
Laudate_Dominum
yeah.. I wish there was something like that. It would be a good thing to have on the internet. Every dogmatic statement ever made listed by topic. There might be less heresey if people getting a degree in Theology had to pass a test on that. Aloysius
not necessarily dogmatic, just infallible. and yeah, that couldn't ALL be compiled, but i mean have sections topic by topic with a bunch of ex cathedra infallible quotes in each one. i at least want some early pope quotes we can consider ex cathedra... any1 got any? Laudate_Dominum
I thought of another book, it's called "The Christian Faith" and it's published by Alba House. I don't like it as much as Ludwig Ott's book but it's still amesome. It's basically a bunch of chapters on stuff like Scripture and Tradition, The Triune God, Jesus, Mary, the Church, Liturgy, Marriage, the Eucharist, Judgement, the Fall, etc.. Most topics are in here. Anyway all the chapters are nothing but excerpts from Church Councils and Popes arranged chronologically. So if you want to know what the Church says about say Marriage you go to the chapter and it has a statement from Pope Alexander III, one from Pope Innocent III, the General Council of Florence, Trent, all the way up to a statement from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 1994. It's very cool. The only problem is that not all the statements are stricly dogmatic, but they are all official Church statements and a large percentage are dogmatic decrees. Laudate_Dominum
The classic resource is called "Denzinger's" or something like that. It's always refered to in Theology texts when they are quoting some old Pope or Council. I looked on Amazon.com and the best looking thing that came up was "The Sources of Catholic Dogma" by Henry Denzinger which is probably a newer edition or something. PhatPhred
The original Latin text of a large number of important Church documents can be found in: Enchiridion Symbolorum: definitionum et declarationum de rebus fidei et morum , edited by Heinrich Denzinger and Adolfus Schonmetzer, Herder & Herder, 1998, ISBN: 0824521501, paper, $32.95. Aloysius
Wherefore, in order that all doubt may be removed regarding a matter of great importance, a matter which pertains to the Church's divine constitution itself, in virtue of my ministry of confirming the brethren (cf. <Lk> 22:32) I declare that the Church has no authority whatsoever to confer priestly ordination on women and that this judgment is to be definitively held by all the Church's faithful. (from ORDINATIO SACERDOTALIS) here's the first one i can think of. EDITED FOR LINK: http://www.ewtn.com/library/PAPALDOC/JP2ORDIN.HTM the thing is, the whole thing isn't necessarily infallible, just the quote.
