Totus Tuus
I've got very Dutch hair, that is: it like to do the exact opposite of what it's supposed to do! Fortunately, it responds very well to reverse psychology, so when I want it flat and out of the way (like when I'm going to church) I'll leave it loose until the very last minute, after which I'll tie it up. And if I want it nice and flowing, like for a concert, I'll pin it up and take the pins out ten minutes before going on-stage, and during that time my hair will sort itself out. I shudder of the thought - but what will it do under a veil? (Hedgehog-like images come to mind!)
There are some indispensable items for wearing long hair under a veil: elastic headband bobby pins those little v-clips that clip open and closed elastic ponytail holder a flat barrette What I used to do is put mine up half-way in the barrette, braid the rest and then fold it at my neck so the bottom of the braid was pointing up, and then pin it to my head with the bobby pins. The v-clips are for when you have strays, and the elastic headband is for making the veil stay on if it's not tight enough, or holding it back if it wants to go wild under your veil

Would that work under the full viel though? Or was it only good for the postulents veil?
Incarnate Word Postulant
I had to make a cap (just like a shower cap, but made of white cotton), it hides my very black hair and keeps it under the veil. Otherwise, my hair starts going every single way possible, and my veil slips off. I'm having to let my hair grow, if I keep it short it won't stay under the veil. So, with shoulder lenght I will be able to use a barrette and force it to stay under the veil.
The sisters with habits and the full headgear have short hair so there's not really a "lump" problem there I had really long hair when I was a postulant so it was challenging at times but sometimes I just had to live with having a lump under my veil! For instance, in this picture, the day I entered there was quite a lump because I had my hair in a bun when I received the veil Edited January 3, 2007 by Totus Tuus
Emile James
more shaved heads nuns and veils! "Passionist nuns live some of the most austere religious lives: They shave their heads; get up at 2 a.m. every day to pray; whip themselves with small leather lashes to share in the pain of Christ’s flogging; practice long-term fasting, give up foods such as fruit and vegetables during the summer as penance, and only speak one hour a day. Their suffering, they believe, can help save lost souls." "Although their faces seem pale and gaunt, their eyes tired with black circles, these women laugh and tell jokes and poke fun at slow-praying sisters or sisters who fall asleep during their vigils" "Sister Marie Michelle is tall with sparkling blue eyes. If she had hair, it would be thick and black. Even without makeup and after years of less than five hours of sleep a night, her face beams a wide smile. But she is quite serious when she says she made the decision to become a nun at the age of four. The story goes that little Marie stood on a kneeler while her mother prayed beside her. In front of them sat a nun. “I leaned over the pew and I grabbed the bottom of her veil and I picked it up to see what was underneath it. And my mom grabbed my hand and was mortified and she said: ‘Don’t touch the nun! She’s married to Jesus.’ That was it for me!.” ------------------------------------------------------------- Young postulants marching into chapel to receive habits in Alton, Illinois. "Belongea marched up the aisle carrying a tall white candle. A wide smile spread across her soap-cleaned face as she spotted her parents seated along with her brother and five sisters, their spouses and children. She wondered what her family thought of her hair. The sisters had shorn her brown tresses the day before, leaving strands less than a finger long. But Belongea kept back a long lock for her mother, a gift she would present no-doubt with tears. Belongea wasn’t nervous really, but excited, eager to get through the event. But what if she didn’t turn the right way or bow at the right time? http://www.aliciapatterson.org/APF1903/Reed/Reed03.jpg photo When the Archbishop called her to the altar, he placed the dress and veil in her hands and said: “The religious habit is the garment of your salvation.” http://www.aliciapatterson.org/APF1903/Reed/Reed04.jpg photo The postulants clutched their veils and habits to their chests and hurried to a back room where they slipped off their black jumpers and white blouses and put on their habits: calf-length, long-sleeved black dresses with pleats in the front and secret pockets in the petticoats where the sisters carry their rosaries, pens or candy for the students. The young women stared at each other. “You look so holy!” Belongea told one of the women, then giggled. Their veils felt awkward at first and they reminded each other not to get “veil neck” — a condition in which a sister stiffens and won’t turn her head for fear she’ll lose her veil. the last 2 pics and paragraphs are about this Community http://www.altonfranciscans.org/default/Formation%20Page.htm Edited January 3, 2007 by Emile James
