One time when we had our associate pastor over for dinner, my son asked him, "So, why do you always wear BLACK?" And he explained to him that it symbolized dying to self (which my seven year old didn't understand at all).

Makes sense. But now I am confused. Our Associate Pastor wears a baby blue shirt most of the time. One of the priests passing thru a while back did also. Do different orders wear different colors? I assume they are all acceptable since they have the standard Roman collar....?

I don't know the real reason we wear black but when anyone asks I tell them because when we were ordained we laid down in front of the altar, a sign that we lay down our lives for the service of God and His people. What is known as "dying to the world." Yet, that white little tab is a sign that there is hope and that though we have died to the world we are also signs of the life we will live in our glorified state, the reason the entirety of our lives should reflect this. I say it a lot more eloquently but my brain is a bit cloudly from sleeping a while today :)

Oh, and your second question...no I am not from Scotland, that is the name of the parish, it is actually located in NJ.

God Bless

Sounds like a good answer to me. That is just like a nun's/sister's veil. :)

A nice explanation I've heard of the collar being white and the clerics black, is that the white collar symbolizes the "light in the darkness" that a priest is supposed to announce to the world, and frankly, be.

This is more of an epsiocpalian thing, but has come into the Catholic Church. They have the option of purchasing purple, white, amongst other colours, but I think the preference of the Church is black.

my favorite minister(we rotate them on our small island) once did a service wearing short shorts and a t shirt!

also after i played some classical type songs (green sleeves, classical gas) for our church, he came up to me and asked me what i really liked to play, and he requested some old rock and metal too. man is he cool. he isnt young either more like 70 yrs old.
