Explicit Content

Is it offensive to God to listen to music that has explicit content? Music videos on MTV & BET that are not up to par with Catholic morality? Should Catholic avoid these things?

God bless,

I think it depends more on your attitude and how much you're absorbing the message, although if you surround yourself with explicit stuff all the time it's definitely going to affect your spiritual life and attitude (unless you somehow have no propensity to sin :) ). While I have Dr. Dre and Tupac mp3s on my iPod along with EWTN podcasts, I actually tend to listen to rap either just for fun or in light of the spiritual side that's often reflected (of course, not so much on the surface). Some questions of morality have definite answers, but this is one more of a grey area where you have to look into your conscience and ask yourself what you truly desire for your relationship with God to grow.

That said, the explicit content itself is definitely offensive to God, so keep in mind that in general it's best to avoid anything that is offensive to God. Of course, you can't do that completely without moving into a monestary, but you can make choices and be actively engaged so that you're aware of the message you're receiving and have your guard up.

Thy Geekdom Come

Our senses are gateways into our souls. Just as Christ said to pluck out your eye rather than let it lead you to sin, so you must also do with any other sense (figuratively). Music has a way of impacting the soul and making us think certain ways...even without words. It is dangerous to listen to explicit music and it is presumptive to say that it won't bother you (it's not something that affects some and not others...it's intrinsic to the music, not to the person, so it affects everyone).

I'd highly suggest changing your musical selection.
