Socrates
Further more, we are living in a capitalist world, it is not profitable to give grain to people who can not pay. Sad but true.
Diverging from the whole vegetarian debate here, I just thought I'd say that replacing capitalism with a socialist system or such would not solve anything. "Capitalist" countries such as the U.S. have led the world in charitable donations. Much of the problem involves corrupt third-world governments, who use international aid to enrich themselves, while the people starve. More needs to be done to ensure that aid actually goes to the people in need. Contrary to leftist propaganda, the problem is much more than "those greedy rich capitalist countries hording their food." And socialist/communist countries have done a miserable job of feeding their people.
