Real Estate Agent Gives Guns To Homebuyers

HOUSTON (Reuters) - A Texas real estate agent looking to add more bang to her business is offering clients in law enforcement a free Glock pistol if they buy a home from her.

Julie Upton, a Houston-area real estate agent, spurned traditional buyer incentives like free gasoline cards or home improvement store gift certificates.

Instead, she placed an advertisement offering a pistol with the purchase of any home worth at least $150,000 in the city police department's monthly publication, "Badge & Gun."

The free guns are only for those in law enforcement, said Upton, who is married to a police officer.

"We thought it would be a good way to entice other police officers," Upton said. "And whether people want the gun or not, it has stirred up a lot of attention."

Upton has given away two pistols to police officers who purchased homes from her. The guns cost about $500.

And so far the advertisement has not generated negative attention from the anti-gun lobby, she said.

In Texas, no license is required to own a rifle, shotgun or handgun, but a permit is needed to carry a concealed weapon, according to the National Rifle Association.

Only in Texas could this have happened, only in Texas.

However on a serious note, I completely support this idea of getting a free gun with a purchase of a 150 hundred grand home. If you have just bought a Home you need some big breaks, especially if your a police officer and you have to be out on unexpected work shifts throughout the day and night, Most cops dont have enough time to Organize their newly purchased home, go to work all the dang day and night, and then buy a gun for a privitized usage.

But my first thought was if a Real Estate Agent is giving guns to be people she sells houses too what does that say about the neighborhood?

"Thanks for buying the house, but you may need this"

Many states are like this actually (or similar), including Virginia. I can actually walk into my local Wal-Mart, and purchase a shotgun or a regular rifle (have to be 21 to buy a pistol). All I need is my ID, be the legal age of 18, and fill out some paper work. I can join the military as low as 17, buy a gun at 18, but can't drink till I'm 21.

Well, do we really want 18 year olds with guns running around drunk?
[/quote]

You got a point. It's better having 18 year olds running around smoking, at least they're in their right mind.

That's not too far fetched. In Chicago a few years ago, a program was instituted to give incentive for police officers to reside in, how shall I say, "the not so best of areas" by somehow offering them lower interest rates on their mortgages. It was hoped that having more police live in a neighborhood would make it safer. I haven't heard how any statistics on how many took advantage of it and if it is working or not.

It all depends on what they're smoking....

Thank God I live in TX. But a Glock? Couldn't she give them something more attractive?

Maybe she sells homes in the 5th Ward or something...

No, actually it's not that expensive to buy a home in most of Houston.

Because we are in our right frame of mind and we actually know that GUNS don't kill people on their own. And no, the idea wouldn't be stupid for people who are not police officers. Every person has the right to defend himself, especially every father his family. I think there are other good ways to sell homes, but offering a gun is not a stupid idea at all; if you own a house, you're going to want to protect what's inside of it.

Well put, however the person who is buying the gun sould also be able to know how to use it for the right time and keep good matienence on it, otherise selling the gun would be useless to a buyer because the guns wouldn't funiction properly. or You would have poorly trained or lack of training, in the skill to use such a device.

Every person in America sould know how to fire a gun, effectively too, without or miniumal mishaps.

yup, cause giving everyone and their dog a gun makes us all safe!
funny that us canadians, who actually need to know how to use a gun before buying one and even then no deathtrap handguns, have so much less murders and death from violent crime than the USA.

That sure would make me feel safe, knowing that if i really pissed my neighbor off, that hes got a loaded magnum under his pillow.
you know , of course how many gun related deaths are people accidentally shooting their own husband, etc coming in drunk, or the kid finding it, loaded, and blowing there best friends head off?

not that im saying all guns are bad, we own a few rifles for hunting and such, but buying a handgun, a weapon only made to kill people, for "protection" is absurd. unless for some reason we are in a nuclear fall out with anarchy running rampant. which isnt happening anytime soon
