okay. Does anyone know of a good guitar book to teach scales for soloing? I'm borrowing a friends book right now that goes through alot of scales and modes used in metal, but it doesnt give much detail on compiling them into solos other than, 'use these scales over these rhythm chords and these over these chords.' Does anyone here really have these down? Do the great guitar players like Malmsteen and Vai (well Vai probably does) have all these down enough to be able to just let em flow out during a really fast improvized solo? I feel even if I could master them, which would take me years it seems, I would still need to sit down for awhile just to pattern out a great solo that isnt a bunch of scales. Right now, all my stuff is choppy, because I learned to sweep pick during solos, and then I learned to do speed alternate picking scales (both of which Im still novice level) but I dont really know how to stick em together well enough to write a good solo.

you just gotta feel it. and you need to have a backing track to work in a good melody. try recording on you computer the soloing over. also www.jamcenter.com

i dont know many scales but i can feel them well enough to do a good improvised solo in a jam context or over top of other tracks.

yeah, I could probably record a rhythm track with audacity and convert it to an mp3, then slow it down. I just seem to be too lazy

Lately I seem to be getting the hang of it a bit more, but its still pretty basic. I just think of the main rhythm line in my head and slow it down alot, to find out how many times I'll sweep a particular chord and whatnot and then continue and progress to another lick.

Anyone listen to Dream Evil? They got the name from Dio I think. 'Prophecy' is a good song, so is 'Save Us'. I'd be willing to bet that Synister Gates from Avenged Sevenfold listens to Gus G or Mark Black alot of the A7X solos sound alot like the ones in Dream Evil.

Another band called Eulogium is also a black metal band with only one member, but I don't know it's actually meant to be a Catholic band or just Christian, but he also does the instruments for Magisterium, the Catholic grindcore band.

my bf plays in a band called Denial Method. They're heavy, not Catholic or Christian, but they're very talented and have great lyrics. The guys pray before they perform...really great guys. Humble too.

Illuminandi is a Catholic gothic/symphonic metal band with violin/cello, Eterna is a Catholic power metal band that has used some symphonic/neo-classical elements.

Virgin Black is a a fairly well known gothic/symphonic metal band that probably have Christian members.
