It works in three ways: 1) Prevents ovulation. 2) I forget, exactly what this one is... 3) Deteriorates the lining of the uterus so that a newly conceived child can not attach itself to the uterine wall. If I'm not mistaken, then the pill has two hormones: estrogen and progestin. The former prevents conception, the latter is the abortifacient part. Birgitta Noel Posted December 8, 2006 Share Posted December 8, 2006 Emergency contraceptives have four possible mechanisms of action: preventing or delaying ovulation, preventing sperm capacitation or fertilization, preventing the transfer of an embryo from the fallopian tube to the uterus, or preventing implantation of a fertilized egg. It is the last two mechanisms that aren't acceptable. As for what hormones are in the pills it depends on the pill, there are various combinations.
