Christmas Giving

So I've known people all throughout my life who will give just for the sake of saying they gave. They put absolutely no thought into the gift and they don't really care if you like it so long as you appreciate the fact that they gave you SOMETHING (-- usually so that you'll return the 'favor'). I do think it's important to be appreciative no matter the gift, but when someone just picks something up with their milk and bread, it's hard to understand why they want to give at all. Ya know?

So... what do you give? Do you put thought into your gifts? Make them yourself?

If I'm not making my own gift, I really put a lot of creative thought into it. I love to see people light up when they open their presents. I like showing them my love and care for them in the time it takes to put their things together, regardless of the size or cost.

I have to admit, if you don't live near me, you may never see your gift. But that doesn't mean I didn't work really hard on it.

well, i dunno. it's hard to be really thoughtful and creative with gift giving because: i'm not crafty; i really don't have that much imagination; and i'm poor.

so while i try to get something that fits the personality, sometimes, i just can't.

I have a memory bank the size of a small country, and if someone mentions something they like in passing I store it away. When they open their presents, they are flabbergasted usually that I remembered something that seemed insignficant at the time.

I abhor Christmas Lists - getting and giving.

Its not the size or cost - but rather the thought behind it.

My best friend says I'm difficult to give a gift to. I don't see it.

I agree... I hate lists... suggestions, yes, maybe if the giver is far away and wants some ideas for my kids or something. Making a list of stuff to be obligated to get defeats the purpose.

I'm poor too. When in doubt, offer a Mass. Your Catholic friends will appreciate it. If they're not Catholic, make use of sales and paint pens. :P:

and to tell you the truth, i think if i told the majority of my Catholic friends that I had a Mass said for them, they would be like :idontknow: "What?"

I saw it. I don't think I'm crafty - at the very least, my friends get a good chuckle out of the gift.

Oh well. What are ya gunna do? :pinch:

One of my favorite gifts to give to coworkers/teachers/acquaintances/etc is hot chocolate. Almost everyone loves it and you can make the packages yourself. You buy cone bags from the party store, hot chocolate mix, chocolate chips, mini-marshmellows, and anything else you want to add. You put in enough hot chocolate to one cone bag for two servings and tie it. You slip that bag into another and top it with a layer of chocolate chips, marshmellows, and whatever else it is you've bought. That, coupled with a homemade card and a smile, is a simple, fun, and usually much-appreciated gift. ^_^

Suggestions good. Lists=greedy and rude.

Yes. Suggestions help a lot for those people who are so all over the place that it's hard to pinpoint a specific item. Or for those people who are such good gift-givers themselves that you don't know what to do!

You know what... having a Mass said for someone is something I never thought of before...

I think I may do that for a number of my good friends :)

I used to try to make presents for my siblings, but I am buying this year. One year I made snow globes out of clay and jelly jars and white glitter. I am trying to make a best friend scrapbook for my best friend, but it's going to take me awhile to collect pictures, make copies, an assemble it. So it might turn into a birthday present or even a graduation present.

I really have NO CLUE what to get my Dad or my best friend... and you'd think they'd be the easiest to buy for, since I know them so well. I know my friend spent a lot of money on me... and I feel bad that I don't have the money to spend on her, but she already knows that I don't, so she can't be expecting me to. I would like to maybe make something for her... but what? :idontknow:
