scardella
Simple, there's a systematic emphasis on "inclusiveness" to deemphasize Christmas that 90+% of people in the US actually celebrate in their "Happy Holidays" or "Season's Greetings". Happy New Year has its own greeting. Edited December 5, 2006 by scardella
son_of_angels
Yes, and it began with the conservative families and their "free-market" mentality, going out and splurging on the commercialized, Americanized Christmas celebration.
Socrates
The "War on Christmas" is but a small skirmish in the larger war by secularist liberals to remove anything smacking of Christianity from American public life. Let's face it, the secularists would have no problem with Christmas if it did not involve Christ. And O'Reilly's speaking of the "War on Christmas" is neither genius nor idiocy - it is simply pointing out and giving a name to a well-established phenomena. Socrates
Yes, and it began with the conservative families and their "free-market" mentality, going out and splurging on the commercialized, Americanized Christmas celebration.
Yes, of course, while all the liberals no doubt were busy keeping Christ in Christmas, praying reverently in church, and sharing with the poor (when they weren't busy supporting the ACLU). Yes, the secularization and commericalization of Christmas was all the fault of those awful conservatives! No doubt it was some evil Right-wing plot! I actually fail to see what "conservatism" has to do with anything here. From my experience, conservatives are no more likely to be excessive in their Christmas spending than liberals. (Though perhaps liberals are somewhat more likely to not celebrate Christmas in any form.) (And it seems you have no real concept of what conservatism even means!) And there is nothing intrinsically wrong with buying Christmas gifts for others, as long as it is kept in its place. The problem is spiritual - it will not be solved by replacing the free-market with some socialist system - unless you mean in the sense of making everyone too poor to afford Christmas gifts (Or will Christmas shopping be banned by the government?). Perhaps your ever-benevolent socialist government might be so kind as to allot all the citizens an extra bowl of rice on Christmas - assuming the central agricultural planning went well that year. Please think before you spout such moronic drivel! Edited December 6, 2006 by Socrates
kujo
When did this whole giving other people gifts on Christmas start, anyway. I mean, I love getting presents as much as anybody else, but I'm just confused. I've heard that it's in honor of the Magi giving Christ the gifts of myrrh, frankensense and gold. I dunno... Balthazor
Maybe there is and maybe there isn't. I suppose it depends on what you define to be a "war". I mean right now i thnk it might be just a "police action"
Groo the Wanderer
Next time you go shopping and someone hits you with that 'Happy Holidays' nonsense, look em in the eye, smile broadly and sweetly, and say 'not quite. try again.' It's amazing to see the range of responses. Some smile big and say Merry Christmas, some repeat Happy Holidays blithely, some stnad there and look all confused until you tell them to have a Merry Christmas. My daughter brought home a permission slip for her to participate in the 'Winter Concert' at her school. I crossed out all the 'winter' and 'holiday' silliness and wrote in Christmas before I sent it back. Not a peep from the teacher. Last year, when I did it, I attached a few paragraphs about how silly it is to NOT say Christmas. For instance, this year their vacation is from 12/18 to 12/29. It misses Haunakkah completely (which is not a huge Jewish holiday anyway), it encompasses only 4 3 days of Kwanzaa (which is a made up holiday), and is not even close to Ramadan. Other than christmas, the only thing else in that timespace is the winter solstace. So if we are not celebrating Christmas, are we celebrating the pagan nature rituals? The teacher sent back a personal note saying she agreed. :
