I know these people very well and I'd say they did it because the campus is in great need of evangelization and an outpouring of grace. There was probably also a motive of "it's just a cool thing to do." I don't think they did it to be seen, although the intention to "belong" could have been a minor imperfection in some who wouldn't otherwise have participated, but everything we do on this earth has imperfection. I probably even would have had that imperfection to some degree.
