Chiquitunga
I was once talking to a Protestant friend that never heard the woman who wiped Jesus' face called Veronica. She thought the name Veronica didn't really sound like a name from the Bible. Her name is not mentioned in the Gospels, but I said that the name is more just part of our tradition in the Church. But then the other day I read something in an article that said the name Veronica comes from the Latin, vera icon "true image" - referring to the image of Our Lord's face on St. Veronica's veil. (I should have realized that - it's pretty obvious ) But isn't that neat? Here's an interesting link about this - St. Veronica There is much speculation into all of this (which you guys can comment on here too of course) - but my main question here is - so this name definitely originates from the story of this woman (whatever her actual name was) in the Bible? It looks like this is the case. I just thought I'd ask here.
phatcatholic
from this article: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/15362a.htm it would appear that the name actually originated as a description of the relic she brought to rome and then was later applied to the woman herself. i would be surprised if anyone was given such a description as a name before she was.
