Moneybags
To address the comment about the Seminary's chapel being a little modern, I'd have to agree. But after praying there and listening to "O Salutaris Hostia" and "Tantum Ergo", I realized it's probably one of the most traditional seminaries in the country. Plus, the chapel is so much better than what it used to be. I heard that years and years ago it used to have shag carpet! Thankfully, the carpet's gone and the reverence and tradition there are amazing. I was amazed at the beauty of the Mass at the University of St. Thomas's Chapel as well. I'm hoping to study there for the Diocese of Joliet.
DAF
Yeah I agree with you, but still, at least get pews instead of those chairs, and a proper stained glass window...but it's the same Mass I suppose. But definitely, in general SJV is one of the most orthodox (little 'o') seminaries I know of. Very conservative. I felt right at home while I was there. Also, UST's chapel was designed by the same architect who designed the Cathedral. Pretty k0oL Aalpha: lol, the Cathedral and the Basilica indeed aren't the same building. EDIT* The darn picture won't work, I'll see if I can dig another one up... Here's a picture of the inside, I'm having the worst trouble finding one of the inside, which is the best part! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:BasilicaofSaintMary.jpg Here's one of the inside, it's not very good though http://www.sacred-destinations.com/italy/i...paradox-400.jpg Edited November 26, 2006 by DAF
aalpha1989
That Basilica looks beautiful, the little I can see of it. I love the blue ceilings.....Are they mosaics? I can't really tell. Looks like an awesome place to have Mass though. When I visited the Cathedral I was in awe....there's nothing like that in Kansas. The closest we have is the Conception Basilica in Conception Missouri....it's a Benedictine Monastary, the Baslica there is amazing. Its about 150 years old but it's been re-done a couple times....I have a picture of it in my profile. I wish we had more classical Cathedrals and churches in the United States. I've been to St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana and the seminary chapel there is pretty modern as well. They converted the pre-vatican II sanctuary into a "choir loft" of sorts. The High Altar isn't there anymore. They basically turned the chapel sideways, so the altar now is where the side of the chapel used to be. It's not really closed in, the back of the chapel (the new back) pretty much just opens up into a hallway. Because it wasn't built to have the altar on the side, there are stained glass windows directly behind the altar and so the crucifix isn't centered, its a little off to the side. Honestly, it would have been a lot better had they kept the High Altar. I just wonder why the turned the chapel like that...and they replaced all the pews with chairs. Also, when I was there, one of the monks who teaches liturgy at the seminary sang the consecration with a piano in the background. Now I know that isn't allowed. The consecration can be chanted, I'm pretty sure, but I know that background instruments and just plain singing isnt allowed. I wasn't impressed, and if I ever enter the seminary *crossing my fingers* I hope it will be Mundelein. So anyway, just thougth I'd tell you I agree with your sentiment about orthodoxy of the seminaries. I hope I get a good one. .

Veritas
Yeah I agree with you, but still, at least get pews instead of those chairs, and a proper stained glass window...but it's the same Mass I suppose.
+ Are you talking about no pews at SJV, SPS, or UST?! There are pews in all three of those places, except if they need to use overflow seating- then, they have to set-up chairs. BTW COOL! I'm glad you were accpeted to UST! I hope things work-out with SJV as well!
DAF
lol, I'm talking about SJV, and nuh uh there aren't pews. They're those cushy chairs with the kneelers that fold out of the back, so you kneel on the kneeler that is attached to the chair of the person in front of you. UST's Chapel is sweet, I don't have many qualms with that. And I didn't visit SPS while I was there, but I'm sure I'll see it eventually!
