PatrickRitaMichael
Hi, I have a question that may seem kind of dumb. If you have to go to confession for a mortal sin, does it mean that your private confession doesn't quite get you back in line w/ God? I love confession so I go regularly. But if you commit a mortal sin on Monday, does that mean that even if you say an act of contrition on Tuesday that you're not forgiven til Saturday confession? I know it seems legalistic, but I'm just curious.
cappie
Contrition is sorrow of the soul and aversion for past sins with the resolution not to sin again. Thus we are sorry for mortal sins because by them we have offended God. Such contrition justifies the sinner before the actual reception of the sacrament of penance when it includes at least implicitly the will to confess. So ones mortal sin is forgiven on the understanding that the sin will be confessed and sacramental Absolution obtained.
