Eragon is a movie being released this year based on an awesome book by Christopher Poalini. Does anyone here know when it is being released? All I've seen for it is a copy of the book with the movie art and photos.

Eragon rocks. Not so good as Tolkien or Rowlings, but excellent just the same.

I thought the second book was better. He did more to make the story his own. In the first book, it was obvious that he'd been heavily influenced by writers such as Ursula LeGuin, Tolkien, etc. Still a good read, though.

Ugg...I thought the first book was pretty decent, if derivative, but the second book was Narcissic (sp?) trash. Eragon becomes a half-elf atheist vegetarian and gets everything handed to him on a silver platter....

It just irritated me. A lot. I'm reserving judgement on the series until Empire, though.

I think the movie comes out on Dec. 19.

Well, Theunknown, symbols can have more than one meaning...in the Bible, the lion is both Christ--I think one of his titles is "The Lion of Judah"--and Satan, who is described as a prowling lion. Satan is a serpent in the garden, but Christ also told his disciples to be "wise as serpents"--not to mention the bronze serpent he had Moses erect. Satan is sometimes called a dragon, but at the end of the book of Job, God uses a creature called "Leviathan", which is describing using dragon-like traits such as scales, fiery breath, etc., as an emobodiment of his awesome power.

As a fantasy writer myself, I can tell you that part of the genre is that writers define things like symbolism within their own world--dragons are a fantasy creature, and can be used in different ways in different settings/worlds o' fantasy. Eragon uses them pretty consistently as icons of good, and attempts to enslave and make dragons do evil are shown as particularly twisted. I've read other books in which dragons are evil or simply wild creatures with no moral dimension. It depends on the world the fantasy writer constructs and what symbolisms are introduced within that context.

Admittedly, there are a few symbols which are so powerful that they really can't really be used in different contexts--crucifixion is the main one that occurs to me. You can't really have a character be crucified or end up in a situation like crucifixion without recalling Christ's sacrifice.

I don't think that's true for dragons, though, simply because Mediaeval artists used them as a convienient symbol for Satan.

You're a fantasy writer? I though I was the only one here...well, there maybe dragons & wyverns in my story, but they get killed off pretty quick. My mom doesn't really like us doing anything with good dragons.

I'd never heard of Eragon before I found out about the film, but it seems alright, although John Malkovich's acting looks pretty bad.

Well the stories are not serious a whole lot, they're more comedy.
