Chiquitunga
The externs in Buffalo get it at first profession, those in the cloister when they make solemn vows and are consecrated.
That's how it was at all the Carmels I visited too - the cloistered nuns do not receive the black veil until Solemn Profession, differing from the Poor Clares, or at least the communities I know of like the PCCs in the Federation of Mary Immaculate and the PCPAs. This is how it is described also in a few old books I've read on Carmel, like the one A Few Lines to Tell You, letters from Carmel. I remember the thread a few months back about the Solemn Vows of a sister at the Terre Haute Carmel - she had a white veil just before the ceremony in the pictures on their site. Same thing here at Morristown: http://www.patersondiocese.org/page.cfm?Web_ID=1918 I think this is how it is at all OCD Carmels, but I could be wrong - not that big of a deal, but a good thing to know of, that not all OCD nuns in white veils are novices. An interesting side-topic, though sorry for a bit of a hijack! :j Edited September 9, 2007 by Margaret Clare
