Here are some beautiful pictures from the Community of St. John in Peoria for the occasion of the clothing of several sisters.

I visited them in June, and I met a one of these new novices who was with me for a short time in the Buffalo Carmel. She is in photo 10 with her hand over her face, which was exactly how she looked when she saw me! :D

What a great communitiy they are!! So joyful!!

These are the Contemplative Sisters of St John. They are semi-cloistered and live on the same grounds as the Brothers, though they have a separate place and chapel. They also have Apostolic Sisters, but they are not in the US yet.

You'll notice it looks like all these sisters must be novices. But actually the fully professed still have the white veil, (but the full veil with the wimple) as the founder Father Marie-Dominique Philippe, wanted them to always be novices of the Holy Spirit. The Mother of the sisters in Peoria is on the left side in photo 8. The Apostolic Sisters have grey veils when they are professed however.

Maybe some of you guys will recognise Fr. Antoine in these pictures, who started the Children of Hope.

The sister that was with me in the Buffalo Carmel is a convert from Protestantism actually. I'm so happy for her! I wonder what her name in religion is now. : )

I believe they are receiving many American vocations. All of these sisters that were clothed are American, and 2 more Americans are entering this Fall.

Someone from very near where I lived entered a couple years ago. She is in France now.

When I visited there, I felt the majority in Peoria were from here. The Mother is French, and a couple of the other sisters I noticed with French accents. But yeah, I think many are joining from here. The Contemplative Sisters also have a house in Laredo, TX. Also, the priest seen in many of these photos (not Fr. Antoine) is American, Fr. Joseph Mary.

Something different about how they live the contemplative vocation is that each sister, about every 2 years, moves to another house of the order. This is so they do not become attached to a certain house and group of sisters, but experience the different houses of the order. But the way of life is the same in all houses. And there is plenty of silence and solitude in their daily schedule.

I really like the stability for the contemplative life of professing vows to one particular house, as the papally enclosed nuns do - like how St. Therese said in her autob. something like - this is it, I am here until I reach Heaven. But also, their is a lot of wisdom in moving to another house, to always being willing to go when the Lord calls.

Yes, they are truly a wonderful and happy community.

These photos were accompanied by two lovely stories about the Community in the Peoria Journal Star (http://www.pjstar.com/stories/102906/FEA_BBB879DQ.040.shtml and http://www.pjstar.com/stories/102906/HEA_BBB87A3Q.040.shtml) :D:

The Community also has an "American" web site: http://www.communityofstjohn.com

They have an Oblature as well for those of you who are considering a third order sort of vocation.

 • 2 months later...

some Philosophy sessions coming up at St. Joseph's Priory in Princeville, IL http://www.communityofstjohn.com/
From Br. John-Luke:

The Brothers announce two upcoming theology sessions that will take place at our monastery with two different priests from the Brothers of St. John in France (both sessions will be given in English).

February 26-March 2 -- Introduction to reading Scriptures: the Wisdom of God taught through His Law - a look at the Old Testament, especially the Pentateuch, with Fr. Alain-Marie, Theology professor for the Brothers of St. John at St. Jodard.

March 5-10 -- Revelation: a Gift from God, Who reveals His most intimate secrets to His closest friends. Was the Word of God necessary for our salvation?
A look at the mystery of Divine Revelation with Fr. Martin, Master of Studies and Theology professor for the Brothers of St. John.

The actual times of the conferences will be determined within the next couple of weeks. We hope to have a large attendance, since these two Brothers have a lot of wisdom to share with us all, so please invite anyone who has a thirst for the Truth, and come numerous!

In Christ,

Br. John-Luke
