franciscanheart
We have a lot of art like this around Dallas (in our malls, even) and I've never really gotten it either.
Piccoli Fiori JMJ
Well, right now for my sculpture class, I am working on a piece in the Expressionist style... I was thinking of putting one of the Psalms into a clay piece... it kinda has to be modern though...

Piccoli Fiori JMJ
I enjoy the art of Byzantine a lot... Baroque is amazing too... Here is my sad attempt at making a Cubist style relief for sculpture... Art like the one above is almost like an experiment or exercise in how elements in art work together... in fact, that is what most modern art is... experimenting and excercises... Kosh
what's not to get? It's "modern" so it's good.
toledo_jesus
it is art for art's sake, and very elitist. it is part of an artistic movement designed to alienate the average man from art and gain prestige among elitists who claim to 'get it' when, in fact, there is nothing to get. here's the de-evolution of art in western society: Art for God's sake Art for man's sake (Renaissance onward) Art for Art's sake (modern art) No Art (the next stage, evident in modern architecture now especially)
As a former Museum employee, I concur. I got to spend hours upon hours looking at art, from prehistoric to modern. It is much as Aloysius says, motivation went from Art for God to art for the individual. I can't conceive of a world with no art, but I can definitely see no new art.
Ash Wednesday
Its the founder of the order of the sister's who run our school's 200th birthday, so they're dedicating this sculpture this week to him and the sisters (I think). But I don't get it. Any ideas? I just think its ugly, but I'm sure some would say I'm just not sophisticated in art.
Nah, don't worry. I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in art with honors, and a Master's degree with Distinction from one of the most prestigious art schools in the world, and after years of working in the field, I think the art world has a little too much of the "emperor's new clothes" syndrome. People think something's great just because everyone else seems to think it's great. If you think it's ugly, don't be afraid to just call it ugly. I personally view it as being less ugly, and more just plain boring if it was in, say, a park. Unless it's meant to be a religious sculpture, and if it was meant to be in a church then I'd call it *really* ugly. I'm a lot more brutal in my opinions about church-related art. Um, I just went back and looked at that sculpture. Upon further review, I've decided that, yeah, I have to admit it is kinda ugly. It looks like the bottom, bladed part of a blender. I thought it was somewhat cute until I saw a horrible looking Terri Schiavo and a weird (pregnant?) Joan of Arc. Most of the people I've shown the pictures to have thought the art was great and was making a point. I just thought it was horrid. They told me I wasn't getting the meaning of the pieces. Mercy me
it is art for art's sake, and very elitist. it is part of an artistic movement designed to alienate the average man from art and gain prestige among elitists who claim to 'get it' when, in fact, there is nothing to get. here's the de-evolution of art in western society: Art for God's sake Art for man's sake (Renaissance onward) Art for Art's sake (modern art) No Art (the next stage, evident in modern architecture now especially)
Thanks for the insight. I agree completely. I look at the minimalist "designs" that are so poular right now, and it is in reality the absence of art. I had never thought about it that way but that is what it is.
