isilzha
Its the founder of the order of the sister's who run our school's 200th birthday, so they're dedicating this sculpture this week to him and the sisters (I think). But I don't get it. Any ideas? I just think its ugly, but I'm sure some would say I'm just not sophisticated in art. KizlarAgha
You're just not sophisticated in art. It is, in fact, VERY ugly. :
Piccoli Fiori JMJ
To be honest, as an art major... I'm not entirely sure of some modern art... I like the way the positive and negative space plays together and it looks like you could probably sit on it. It's interesting though... sometimes we aren't supposed to 'get' art... (I'm not a huge fan of most modern art... there is some I really enjoy though)
isilzha
I would have appreciated a nice statue of the founder or one of the important sisters. Something like that is timeless and is easily understood. But hey, what do I know?
Piccoli Fiori JMJ
Yeah, that would have been nice, but like everyone else... being cutting edge and progressive is the thing... even in stuff like this... Personally, I'd go with more traditional art styles than this... I'm not talking about baroque or anything terribly expensive or elaborate, but simple and traditional. This piece is nice... I've been kind of force fed a lot about modern art and only more traditional forms in drawing and painting.

Thank goodness my Medieval Studies degree only required medieval art history courses. Although, I did take on Early Chinese Art class for fun. I liked most of the pieces a great deal in that course. I don't particularly care for strangely twisted masses of stainless steel, but I guess somebody must like it.

KizlarAgha
I think the best statue would have been a big tree - they're like God's statues. And they even grow and live and such - so much better than modern art.
Era Might
I don't think it's really ugly (as opposed to a lot of modern art), but it is irrelevant. Sacred art is supposed to be catechetical, not abstract gibberish. It's supposed to communicate beauty and the truths of the faith to the average layman. Aloysius
it is art for art's sake, and very elitist. it is part of an artistic movement designed to alienate the average man from art and gain prestige among elitists who claim to 'get it' when, in fact, there is nothing to get. here's the de-evolution of art in western society: Art for God's sake Art for man's sake (Renaissance onward) Art for Art's sake (modern art) No Art (the next stage, evident in modern architecture now especially)
