Discernment Reading

So I know there's a reading list going on one of the other boards, but I was wondering what books people have found helpful particularly in discernment and/or understanding the vocations, etc. I know that I, for one, am always looking for good books to read!!

I have an excellent (I think) reading list for people who are discerning a call to the priesthood or religious life. I'll email it to you as it is quite long and I think I have it in a file that I can attach for you.

I read a book about ones vocation which was a colection of speeches JPII had given on the subject at various times during his pontificate. The name of escapes me now, but it was quite helpful in clarifying the picture. It covers the vocation to religious life/ priesthood as well as marriage in the breathtaking and personal style of our beloved Late Pope. I actually just gave it out to a friend of mine, I hope it will be helpful to him as well.

Oh I also read the book on Mother Angelica by Raymond Arroyo was also very inspirational especially when reflecting on her many sufferings as well as her courage to "walk the tight rope" and place her complete trust in our Lord. I mean this is something I have to continually work on.

"The Meaning of Vocation" It was a really good one!!

One that I read this summer was titled "My Beloved" by Mother Catherine Thomas. I absolutely loved it although, I don't think that it is still in print. But, I think you can find used copies on Amazon. It is about a cloistered Carmelite nun... pre Vatican 2

God Bless

Anna

Peter on the Shore, which is a marvellous book that covers all aspects of vocational discernment. It can be bought from Amazon or read online for free here.

Gift and Mystery by JP2 (the Great)

Virginity by Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM Cap. (JP2's retreat preacher)

--- i read those... very good.

"No Man is an Island" -- Thomas Merton

"Merton and Sufism"

"The Passion of St Therese"

"The Spiritual Writings of St John Bosco"

"Divine Mercy in My Soul" - St Faustina

"The Sexuality of Christ in Renaissance Art and Modern Oblivion"
=== Very good book analyzing art based upon theology and theology of the body. I know it sounds a little strange, but if you are and art buff and like theology it is worth a look.
