HeavenlyCalling
There website is here. Has anyone heard of them or know anthing about them? The only reason I ask is because I have heard some, uh... conflicting reports about them from different people. If you have and could post, I would be very grateful. Thanks!
I've been in contact (via email) two or three times with their VD. They sent me a lovely packet of information about their community. I leave it in the hands of the Lord that if I am to visit them (none of their communities are anywhere closer than a plane ride away) then it'll come to fruition. But in terms of helping to clarify conflicting reports, I don't really know what else I can say that would be helpful.

stlmom
The little bit that I know about them includes: They belong to CMSWR and one of their sisters holds an office with that organization. That's a tip off that they very likely are a faithful group of religious. What's the problem with them?
williamb
I think there is a bit of jealousy and bad blood, because for one thing they have been getting a steady stream of new religious right from their founding back in the 70's onward. Not a huge stream but they've always got them. They also have one of the most beautiful convents anywhere, here in Portland, Oregon. It's up in the gorge and has a gorgeous waterfall on the property, They really lucked out being able to buy the place when they did. That being said, they seem to be no nonsense , prayer oriented women, and they really seem to appreciate mature women who are willing to work for the church and God. They even trained their own mortician for the order believe it or not, they like being self-sufficient.
Sr Mary Catharine OP
I've never heard anything but good about this community. They teach at the Seminary in Denver, they work at the offices in the Vatican. They teach at the JPII in DC. They seem to have sucessfully blended solid traditional religious life with the needs and concerns of today's world. They may not LOOK traditional in a way that some expect but being traditional isn't just about "looks" but about something deeper and if they have solid principles of formation and a solid theology of religious life than what more can you want. HeavenlyCalling
I had justg heared some people say that they were wonderful, their all-time favorite religious group, ect. And then I had som poeople I talked to say that they thought they were a little unorthadox. I just wanted to ask here to get a solid statement one way or the other. (the people here in the pham are like blood hounds when it comes to digging things up on nuns! : : )
Veritas
+ Totally random, but one of their sisters, who I went to school with in Rome at the time, was the first person to receive the Eucharist from Pope Benedict XVI as Pope at his installation mass! Kind of fun -she was SO excited! I agree, the veils are such a turn off fo me, they seem so fussy, but for women that don't mind, they do wear a clearly identifiable habit and seem to be faithful to the Holy Father so
Jennifer
What a wonderful experience to be the first person to receive the Eucharist from Pope Benedict at his installment mass. This looks a vibrant community which is steadily attracting young women. ....I think that their habit and veils are very practical. HeavenlyCalling
A totally random thought, but how do they keep that veil on? It just looks to me like if you made a sudden turn you could loose it ( the veil, I mean.) Edited October 31, 2006 by HeavenlyCalling
stlmom
If you read the home page of their website, you'll see that they declare their faithfulness to the teachings of the Holy Father, and that they mark the Pope's prayer intentions at all times. I went a little deeper into the website to see that they've been working at reviving religious devotional practices such as processions. What a wide range of apostolic work they do! They seem to have a lot of intellectual strength balanced with Franciscan simplicity. And I think their habits and veils are pretty cool... .
