No....

One didn't believe me though that halloween means "All Hallows Eve" and what entitles to this day.

But yeah, I can ramble on, but I won't.

So, I say no.

Halloween is not evil at all. Some people just choose to make it a celebration with ghouls and devils and whatever, but as long as it is used in the right way it is a fun great time.

Samhain is the Irish Gaelic name for the month of November and it translates roughly to "summer's end". The pagans viewed this as a holy day to pray to their spirits for sufficient stores of food to last out the winter. This may or may not have included sacrifices or any of the other pagan rites.

If you approach Halloween from a Catholic perspective, than there is no significant reason to say Halloween is evil.

If you approach Halloween as an opportunity to 'commune' with the spirit realm, than, you have issues.

You mention sacrifices as pagan rites. The Jews sacrificed animals in the temple for a couple thousand years. The entire mass celebration centers around a sacrifice as well. There's nothing pagan about offerings to God.

I was simply including sacrifices as a rite performed by pagans, not a solely pagan rite.

I'm always amazed at how it is that adults are able to inject evil into one of the most innocent nights of the year for children. Kids love costumes, they love pretending, they love dressing up, and they love imagination. This night gives them the ability to indulge all of those instincts while at the same time getting too many sweets. It's absolutely a delightful, joyous time of the year.

For the teenagers and older children, it is also a night of mystery and just the right amount of fear and suspense. There's a reason that horror movies and roller coasters are highly rated with teenagers - there is an element of danger and of risk, while at the same time a knowledge of safety and security. Halloween is a way for these older children to engage in scaring one another in an environment that is safe and tolerant. It's also a way for teenagers and older children to recapture some of the imagination and dressing up of their younger years - sides of themselves they can't show on a regular basis.

It is adults who make Halloween a controversy, not children. The eight year olds going out to get candy don't know the entire history of the day. They don't know about any supposed druidic roots. They don't know about modern pagans and satanists who use the day as a chief holiday. But we do, and that makes us nervous - intent to ban this nefarious influence on our children. But the truth is, if we ignore the controversy of Halloween, and ignore the evils committed by some on Halloween, then the controversy ceases to exist. What threat is there of a demonic influence on children if the children aren't aware of any demonic influences?
[/quote]
For the sake of argument, ignoring any controversy means that it will cease to exist. If we were to ignore abortion, euthanasia, artificial birth control, etc, we'd have far less controversy in our world and in our Church.

I love Halloween. Nobody should let satanists, occultists and wiccans ruin it for what should be a fun holiday that ushers in a very important time of year where we honor our saints and pray for our dead. I think it's one of those few days of the year where the general public acknowledges the fact that there is a life after this one that we need to be thinking about.

On the other hand, I agree with the key points Ash has made here.

Well, since Oct. 31 is also Reformation Day, I can see how it is evil. I'm going to post "95 Apologies" (which is repeating "I apologize" 95 times, "signed" by Martin Luther) on my front door.

This took me by such surprise I nearly spit my gum onto the monitor.

I haven't read the entire thead but I will say I'm pretty sure this is like some sort of important day for Satanists, so make sure you pray some prayers of reparation.

Like this prayer the Angel taught the three children from the Fatima apparitions.

My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love You. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love You.

The Vigil of All Saints is something we as Church Miltant must celebrate as such. "The reconquest of darkness." The Church Triumphant over evil. I believe that children should wear saint costumes. The Litany of Saints, prayers of reparation, holy water, etc. We need to be proactive. Let's bring the Light of Christ into the world.

Be a Christian and wear it on your sleeve---literally. Don't wear satan's carp.
