Theoketos
It comes up often enough in my class room, and I feel I give good answers, but I also want to be more clear. I think that prudence, temperance, and chasity/purity are the big ones, but I am thinking of making a bullet points.
jswranch
It comes up often enough in my class room, and I feel I give good answers, but I also want to be more clear. What are you trying to accomplish?

jswranch
So you are trying to tell some high school level folks what they should and should not expose themselves to? I would say the best thing is to teach them what the truth of sexuality is and how to repsect one another over what to keep away from. Learn the truth, then show what the counterfeit (everyday media) looks like. There are a number of good talks and dvds from good Catholic sources. I can look some up for you, if you want. If needed I will buy and donate them to your class. Keep them away from the following sources: Nudity Selfish sexuality crude humor media that treats humans like animals (fear factor etc) glorifing of violence Check out the CCC. There are a few paragraphs on this. There are also a few encyclicals on the issue.
Thy Geekdom Come
I also suggest staying away from sarcastic comedy...its biting attitude often makes its viewers negative.

heyyoimjohnny
--- emphasizing clear sight of the person in regards to sexual purity. develop vision of person, ultimate calling for all human persons, our relation to them... it's gotten a lot easier for me to avoid lust when I can look at someone and say, "that's a person created for communion with the Holy Trinity." or to say to temptation when I see an attractive girl, "hey, that's my sister!" --- develop prayer habits/spiritual life. it can only be fought with grace anyways. --- consider "you are what you eat." you watch carp, your mind will recieve carp, carp will brew in your hearts. you watch violent material, violence will dwell in your mind, you'll become desensitized. intake good things, and you will dwell on good things in your mind and again will develop clearer vision. --- consider that time spent on watching TV (or whatever) is time you're missing out on awesome experiences of God. --- consider desensitized view of the media is not conducive to our humanity. it is hard to think in a fully human way when the dignity of humanity is downgraded by sexually impure stuff and again, with violence, regard for human life is downgraded --- we're to avoid near occasions of sin. even if you "think you can take it," you're making an unwise decision. even if "you think you can take it," you will become conditioned or desensitized. that's just how it works. --- there are so many better things to do and ways to spend your time than exposure to media. it's addictive, hence constricting our freedom, it's mind-numbing, hence constricting our capacity to function fully, etc. --- we're called to love and communion and that is what will fulfill us. the media isn't conducive to that calling, therefore isn't conducive to happiness. it essentially makes us unhappy. and that's a thought that could be developed a lot deeper. And I hope this wasn't a bunch of useless random junk.
cmotherofpirl
Those are all great ideas Choose your TV watching wisely, limit it to learning opportunities. I think the TV should not be on unless you turn it on to watch a specific program, no random searching or leaving it on for background noise.
