Budge
My grandmother's favorite was this one. If I close my eyes, I can still hear her singing it. She was a devout Baptist woman. On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, The emblem of suffering and shame; And I love that old cross where the dearest and best For a world of lost sinners was slain. Refrain: So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross, Till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling to the old rugged cross, And exchange it some day for a crown.
I love that one too... My minister's wife sings it to the church even all the time. Wonderful hymn!
cathoholic_anonymous
"The Old Rugged Cross" is my dad's favourite hymn. I've often caught him getting a bit watery-eyed when he sings it in church, although he always denies it afterwards. I love so many hymns that it's difficult to choose a special favourite. Here are four that I particularly like. (I've tried whittling it down to two but I can't. I'm just greedy when it comes to church music.) Lord Jesus Christ, You have come to us, You are one with us, Mary's son; Cleansing our souls from all their sin, Pouring your love and goodness in: Jesus our love for you we sing - Living Lord. Lord Jesus Christ, now and every day Teach us how to pray, Son of God; You have commanded us to do This in remembrance, Lord, of you: Into our lives your power breaks through - Living Lord. Lord Jesus Christ, You have come to us, Born as one of us, Mary's son; Led out to die on Calvary, Risen from death to set us free: Living Lord Jesus, help us see You are Lord. Lord Jesus Christ, I would come to you, Live my life for you, Son of God; All your commands I know are true, Your many gifts will make me new: Into my life your power breaks through - Living Lord. ********** For all the saints, who from their labours rest, Who Thee by faith before the world confessed, Thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed. Alleluia, alleluia! Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress and their Might; Thou, Lord, their Captain in the well fought fight; Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light. Allelu, alleluia! O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; All are one in Thee, for all are Thine. Allelu, alleluia! O may Thy soldiers, faithful, true and bold, Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, And win with them the victor’s crown of gold. Allelu, alleluia! And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, Steals on the ear the distant triumph song, And hearts are brave, again, and arms are strong. Allelu, alleluia! The golden evening brightens in the west; Soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest; Sweet is the calm of paradise the blessed. Allelu, alleluia! From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast, Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, Singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost: Allelu, alleluia! But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day; The saints triumphant rise in bright array; The King of glory passes on His way. Allelu, alleluia! ******** Thine be the glory risen, conqu’ring Son; Endless is the victory Thou o'er death hast won; Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, Kept the folded grave clothes where Thy body lay. Refrain: Thine be the glory, risen conqu’ring Son, Endless is the vict'ry Thou o'er death hast won. Lo! Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb; Lovingly He greets us, scatters fear and gloom; Let the church with gladness, hymns of triumph sing; For her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting. Refrain No more we doubt Thee, glorious Prince of life; Life is naught without Thee; aid us in our strife; Make us more than conqu'rors, through Thy deathless love: Bring us safe through Jordan to Thy home above. ****************** Immaculate Mary, our hearts are on fire, that title so wondrous fills all our desire. Chorus: Ave, ave, ave Maria Ave, ave, ave Maria We pray for God's glory, may his kingdom come! We pray for his vicar, our Father, and Rome. Chorus We pray for our mother, the church upon earth, and bless sweetest lady, the land of our birth. Chorus For poor, sick, afflicted, thy mercy we crave; and comfort the dying, the light of the grave. Chorus In grief and temptation, in joy or in pain, we'll ask thee, our mother, nor seek thee in vain. Chorus In death's solemn moment, our mother, be nigh; as children of Mary, O teach us to die. Chorus And crown thy sweet mercy with this special grace, to behold soon in heaven God's ravishing face. Chorus Now to God be all glory and worship for aye, and to God's virgin mother an endless Ave! Not so much because I like the song itself (though it is good), but because I like the context in which it is sung.

Groo the Wanderer
One of mine *ducks for cover* Be Not Afraid written by Bob Dufford, S.J., a Catholic Hymn You shall cross the barren desert, but you shall not die of thirst. You shall wander far in safety, though you do not know the way. You shall speak your words in foreign lands, and all will understand, You shall see the face of God and live. Be not afraid, I go before you always, Come follow Me, and I shall give you rest. If you pass through raging waters in the sea, you shall not drown. If you walk amidst the burning flames, you shall not be harmed. If you stand before the pow'r of hell and death is at your side, know that I am with you, through it all Be not afraid, I go before you always, Come follow Me, and I shall give you rest. Blessed are your poor, for the Kingdom shall be theirs. Blest are you that weep and mourn, for one day you shall laugh. And if wicked men insult and hate you, all because of Me, blessed, blessed are you! Be not afraid, I go before you always, Come follow Me, and I shall give you rest. Archangel
I always liked "Hail Mary, Gentle Woman." Here is one version: http://www.spiritandsong.com/jukebox/songs/1529 Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, O, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of death. Amen. Gentle woman, quiet light, morning star so strong and bright, gentle mother, peaceful dove, teach us wisdom, teach us love. Oh teach us love. Ave, ave, ave Maria. Santa tu eres bendita, María. These are all so beautiful!!! I have too many favorites but, since I was singing this one just last night, I'll share it. refrain You satisfy the hungry heart with gift of finest wheat, come give to us o saving Lord, the bread of life to eat. verse 1 as when the shepherd calls his sheep, they know and heed his voice; so when You call Your family Lord, we follow and rejoice. (refrain) verse 2 with joyful lips we sing to You, our praise and gratitude, that You should count us worthy Lord, to share this heavenly food. (refrain) verse 3 the mystery of Your presence Lord, no mortal tongue can tell; whom all the world cannot contain comes in our hearts to dwell. Thy Geekdom Come
I always liked "Hail Mary, Gentle Woman."
I like it all up until I hear "woman" in place of "women." "Woman" acting as a plural just makes me think of N.O.W. and suddenly Gloria Steinem is in my head saying, "I am strong, I am invincible, I am woman!" I wonder if the writers knew that it sounded like radical feminist rhetoric.
