Let me tell you WHY iPods and iTunes are worth the $$$:
1. They work and they work well together. It's one of the few things where I've been completely amazed at how it "just works."
2. The DRM isn't all that restrictive. If you purchase a song from iTMS, you can burn it to cd. Plus, you can play it on up to 5 comps without a hassle. You can play it forever. You don't have to worry about your subscription running out and not being able to play your music.
3. If you're so inclined, there are fairly easy ways to remove the DRM.
4. iPods and iTunes have intuitive interfaces. One of my CYO kids had a Creative Zen, and it was absolutely clunky to try to use. It was too small for your hand, you had to guess how to work the thing, and the buttons were miniscule. It made you want to throw the thing out the window. The scroll wheel on the iPod makes it really easy to zip through 500 songs, whereas rocker switches or roller switches or buttons to scroll through songs gets tedious really quickly. Smart playlists, integration w/ the store, etc.
5. The prices are reasonable for the media: $1/song is fine for me (considering that cd's generally cost $15) and a whole album $10, TV shows are $2, and movies are $15 or so (considering that new movies usually cost $20) They are widescreen and (almost) dvd quality.
6. Integration. I can listen to my music on my computer, plug in my iPod, it'll synch, unplug it, continue listening on the way to my car, plug it into my stereo, control it from my stereo controls w/ a purely digital interface. That lets me safely change the song, rather than dig around for my iPod, pick it up, arrange my hand on the controls, and finally find the song I want. It has the benefit of muscle memory. I can skip songs without even looking down. It also doesn't degrade the sound quality.
7. Macs are way better than PCs, and I fix computers for a living.
8. Good things are worth paying for. Ex. (though I hate to use this particular car, it probably works best) when you pay extra to get a Lexus GS430, you're getting an objectively better car than if you got a Kia Rio. Both get you from one place to another, but one does it in a much nicer, safer fashion.

Well, is there ANY conceivable way that I can get the 20 stupid iTunes songs that I got onto my mp3 player?

1.make a playlist of the songs you want by hitting the create a playlist button.
2. put a blank cd into your disk drive.
3. in the top right, once the blank cd is in the drive, Hit the burn disc button.

im really bored rite now, and have nothing to do so it wasnt a problem at all... i ahve itunes but dont buy anything from the store. i used to use lime wire but when are comp crashed the guy who fixed it said to take it off because, while at first it was safe but it has gotten really bad apparently. so now i found a way to download songs but they barely have anything. and the music gets sent to itunes so i use it alot. and its easier to butn with itunes the windows media player i think. actually windows just annoys me.

^thats how bored i am. i tool the time to tell you something completely pointless

but couldn't you agree that Macs aren't as susceptible to the same danger of viruses and spyware because most people don't use them?

The people who make the viruses and popups and spyware and garbage that slows down your computer design them to be compatible with pcs cuz that's what most people use...

It's like Mozilla... people think it's "safer" then explorer, but I wonder how safe it would be if everyone started using it...

Well I have my 30 gigger, but I should have went with the biggest GBer they had because I already have 7 GBs on it, and I haven't really made a dent in my CD collection...: (... :(

There's a little of that effect, but the underlying operating systems -- and the concepts behind them -- are very different.

A lot of the problems with security in Windows come from features that Microsoft deliberately put into the operating system, long before using the internet was an everyday thing for people. Programs can install other programs, and the operating system. Programs can autorun without user intervention. Documents can run scripting. Generally, many things in MS work because they can access deep levels of the operating system, and if Microsoft changed that, a lot of important applications would stop working.

Mac OSX is based on FreeBSD, which is a type of Unix, and Unix has always been a multi-user system, with security based on users only being able to modify their own files. It's also a lot more modern, and built with security concerns in mind.
