Electric Guitar

Yeah I know this is a site for rappers so don't shoot me :). I'm getting an electric guitar in the near future, but not sure what to get except that it needs to be relatively small and thin so I can play it sitting down.

Are you looking to buy cheap, or do you want something top of the line?

The Fender stratocaster is by far the most famous line guitars (with it's less expensive Squier stratocasters), and it comes in many different versions, prices from $99-2000...

Ibanez makes another good line of guitars, but this all mostly depends on your tastes

The two absolute best places to buy guitars are either your local Guitar Center or Musician's Friend online.

I bought my bass off of Musicians Friend, and they're somewhat less expensive then other retailers, but if you go to Guitar Center, they'll let you pick up any of the guitars and play them (which makes buying online pretty blind.)

I'm sponsored by RavenWestGuitars. I doubt that I will ever play another gig without a RavenWest. They look amazing, they sound amazing, and they are cheap. They aren't distributed (to cut down cost) so you have to buy them online, but you really have nothing to worry about. They run from about $150 to $450. Seth White and Cheer up Charlie strongly recommend them. Oh...and tell them that we sent you. ;)

P.S. I don't endorse other bands linked from their site...or their "RavenWest Girls" section, but I won't let those things spoil the fact that they make great git boxes.

Well pricewise... I can't go too expensive but I want something that'll be decent for starters, and that can go for awhile if I decide to keep up with it. Considering there's other stuff I need to get with it (amps etc.) I was thinking I am around the 200-250 range for the actual guitar. What does that narrow me down to? :D:

This page lists alot of guitars in the 100-200 range, you can change it to find 200-300 range. I recommend writing down the names of one's your interested in and trying them out at a guitar retailer somewhere. If you can't get to a shop to try any out, just remember you can't go wrong with the Fenders and Ibanezes. Squier, ESP, Epiphone, Jackson, Peavy and Washburn are also guitar brands to go with. They make for a good beginner guitar that can carry you through continued use...

For amps, look through the Musicians Friend site some more, particularly Fender, Marshal, Crate, and Peavey. I don't mean to sound like a Fender spokesman, but they truly are a good company. They have several lines of amps, some of which are relatively inexpensive. I bought a 25Watt Fender Bassline kickback model for my bass, and I now use it for both my bass and my electric guitar (although I usually run it through an external cabinet speaker for the guitar.) Amps really aren't to big of a deal when your starting off. A cheap practice amp will go along way, especially if you get one with "line out/external cabinet" capabilities. Then you'll be able to plug into a sound system or a bigger speaker.

You'll of course want cables as well.

Depending on the style your getting into, you might want to buy some effects pedals later on. I recommend BOSS and Digitech effects (also in in Musicians Friend.) If you buy a nice amp, sometimes they come with a stomp box for different distortions (though most guitar amps have some type of gain/distortion built in.) MF's site allows you to download soundbytes of the wide asssortment of effects they sell.

I play a single-coil strat right now, but my next guitar will probably have humbucking pickups. Humbucking pickups are double wound coils, which mean one is wound in one direction and the other is wound in the opposite direction (actually the same direction, but from the other side>>I still don't totally understand them.) What this does is cancel out some of the feedback so you'd end up with a cleaner sound. It won't make the guitar any louder, but tends to sound a little deeper and clean. Right now I'm liking the feel of the three single coils because they help me with pinch harmonics and getting a good thrashing sound, but I'm pretty sure my next one will have double-coils...

I'm back again. What do you think of this deal? Is it good or bad, or just okay?:

1998 mexican Fender Stratocaster in "Near Mint" condition. $269.00 (including shipping costs)

There is not a scratch or nick or ding anywhere on the body of this guitar ...front or back....The neck has one little ding on the back of the headstock (it wouldn't even photograph)...The frets show minimal wear and the electronics work perfectly and quietly....The action is low and fast with no buzzing and it sounds awesome....If it were not for the little ding on the headstock I would have no problem calling this guitar mint. It comes with a gigbag and full insurance.

I also still need an amp. I'm told the Roland Microcube is a decent one. I really don't want to spend more than 150-200, but will if I have to to get a good one.

Sounds like you got a good one, especially with the has the low no-buzz action. I'm always tweaking mine to get a decent balance between low action and no buzz.

I'm actually going out to buy the new Crate 150 Power Block pre-amp thing. Both Guitar center and Musicians Friend are selling it for $100 for a limited time. If you have a decent 8 Ohm speaker on hand, it is definitely the amp bargain right now.

k thanks. About the amp. What if you have no speakers? :). Do I need them also with the amp, and which one is good for that as well?

Also for amps something that would be good is one that still sounds good at relatively low volume because I will be playing a lot in my dorm room.
