SevenSwans
John, Thank you very much for your kind offer! I will do as you suggest and write to you closer to the time of my trip! Peace, Lita
Peace to you Lita - You will love being with the Bethlehem Sisters. I go there frequently and I always can't wait to get back. It's like heaven (at least to me). I am also a lay associate of the monastery. I was thinking that if you contact me about a month before your arrival there I may be able to pick you up in Livingston Manor. I can't promise this at this point but if I can arrange a visit to the monastery that coincides with your stay I will do that. Believe me it's no sacrifice I would be there all the time if I could. I don't live close to the monastery but as I said I am a frequent visitor. For your own safety and peace of mind mention this plan to the Sisters - they all know me. My name is John McHale. So let's see what happens in June. all the best your brother john

emmaberry
Hello, I am fairly new to Phatmass. I have this thread bookmarked and pull it up often for info on the Monastic Sisters of Bethlehem in Livingston, NY. I feel I might have a vocation to this order and have contacted the sisters. I plan to stay at their monastery for 8 days, and if that goes well, then to go on the discernment month at the house in France. Does anybody have any advice for me as I talk with the sisters and prepare to visit the monastery? THis is my first official 'vocation stay' at a religious house, so I am nervous! Thank you. TheresaThoma
Emma My best advice is to just be yourself. It sounds kind of obvious but sometimes it can be difficult as we really want to fit in with a community. Also relax, and be open to the experience!
Hi Emma!! Sorry, I meant to reply here earlier. You're probably leaving pretty soon. Have a wonderful retreat there, and seriously if you can afford the plane ticket to France, definitely go to the Evangelical Month!!! Oh my goodness, I cannot tell you how beautiful it is ... It is really a once in a lifetime opportunity .. and even if after your retreat in Livingston Manor you don't feel they are it, I would still recommend going. That is how I felt, but they still encouraged me to go. Oh my goodness, it was the best month in my life! Just wow .. that's all I can saw. Okay, ttyl! And feel free to PM me. God bless! This thread is ancient, but oh boy, are you the person I've been looking for! Can you tell me about the sisters' way of life? How similar are they to the Carthusians? Please tell all! Gabriela
Amazing, life changing & challenging - every act is to support the route to of harmonising of body & mind with Soul ( the lifelong path) so as to be available for stillness of moments we are aware of Gods Presence & still able to breathe & live under such natural joy.... That your heart must burst with Love If you don't mind, AnnL, would you tell us if you were a novice with the sisters? Why did you leave? (No need to say if you're not comfortable!) There are some things I'm particularly curious about: Do the sisters eat in their cells, like the Carthusians? Because I see their "cells" are individual cabins. I wonder how much schlepping of those little food-tower things a lay sister would have to do to get food to all those cabins! Also, do the sisters eat meat/fish? How many sisters are there? Do they often receive new vocations? May the sisters leave their cells to go for a solitary walk if they like, or may they only walk in their cabin's garden except for during the Spatiamentum on Sundays? How do the postulants and novices meet with the Novice Mistress? How often (per week)? For how long (each meeting)? Do the sisters place great emphasis on study? What kinds of work do the sisters do? If a novice wishes to learn a particular craft, will she be "apprenticed" to another sister who will teach her? How are decisions about "work assignments" made? Are the sisters very open to receiving visitors at any time of year, or do they typically request that interested women come only during group retreats? Is it a difficult order to discern with (in terms of time, money, and other demands that might cause frustration, etc.)? Do the sisters' families come to visit? How often? May the sisters write to/call their families? How often? Do the sisters ever leave the laura? For what reasons? Sorry if this overwhelms you. I'm just terribly interested in this community!
