Funnily enough, Nunsense, I was just at prayer the other day and this community and YOU popped into my head, and I thought...yes, that does sound like a nice fit, doesn't it! LOL

If I can get this link to work:
this is a European editorial, conveniently it has a side-by-side English translation (original: French).
There is a direct reference to a journalistic expose, in the Christian weekly magazine La Vie (french language), of monastic expressions that have received negative press. So far I have no luck finding this expose (although the magazine has its own website). Here however is the editorial:
http://www.chemin-neuf.org/chemins_neufs/n3/edito.html

Note the direct reference to foundress Isabelle.

This is an older thread, first of all, from last year.

Has anyone else seen this webpage with its links? there seems to be a wealth of connections here.

:bump: :)

Found a video in both French & English that shows movie clips & images of the Monastic Brothers in the rhythm of their daily life...I'm guessing it would be similar for the sisters...:saint:

Heard from an Aspirant to Sisters of Bethlehem today. :D Doing a bit of web research on them and glad for this thread. Unfortunately, of the 10 or so links I tried on it, all had been removed. ?

That, I can believe:
moreover, in my experience, the working links to working webpages on this congregation, are in languages other than English. Italian, for example, or French.

Did your research scare up this one? Not a target page, but at least has info in English.

This is a correction and update of an older thread.
My apologies for my mistaken use of the word "Foundress." I stand corrected: Soeur Isabelle is the successor of foundress Sr. Marie, who is said to have died around the year 2000.

Margaret Clare,

I am going to visit the Sisters of Bethlehem Monastery in early June of 2011. I am wondering how costly the taxi service from Liberty to the monastery wound up being. I phoned one place in Liberty and they quoted me $60 one way -- that seemed high for a fifteen-mile rural trip!

I also did a google maps search and it looks like a 4.5 mile walk from the place the bus drops you off in Livingston Manor to the monastery. That might be doable (I'm on the younger side and I'm not afraid of some exercise) but if its up a steep road lugging my bags might prove to be difficult. What do you think? If it weren't for all the books I'm bringing I'd say no problem but as you can imagine I am planning on doing some reading. :)

If you have any other suggestions as far as transporation goes, or anything else, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Peace,

Lita

To get there I have always used Shortline Bus. www.shortlinebus.com The first time I went there I got off at Livingston Manor, and a friend of the sisters met me and drove me to the monastery. It is up a forested camp road, a pretty long distance from the town. But when I went there last year, the sisters told me they no longer have a driver in Livingston Manor, so I got off the bus at Liberty, NY and went to the local taxi place they referred me to. A taxi driver drove me up there. I felt it was pretty safe, though a long ride.

It's good to arrive there during the day, as they retire at 8 PM. Vespers is around 5:45 I think. But you can also arrive after or during Vespers, as it may not be possible for you to catch the earlier bus, as it wasn't for me.

Peace to you Lita - You will love being with the Bethlehem Sisters. I go there frequently and I always can't wait to get back. It's like heaven (at least to me). I am also a lay associate of the monastery. I was thinking that if you contact me about a month before your arrival there I may be able to pick you up in Livingston Manor. I can't promise this at this point but if I can arrange a visit to the monastery that coincides with your stay I will do that. Believe me it's no sacrifice I would be there all the time if I could. I don't live close to the monastery but as I said I am a frequent visitor. For your own safety and peace of mind mention this plan to the Sisters - they all know me. My name is John McHale.
So let's see what happens in June.

all the best
your brother
john
