Ash Wednesday
I guess as he was a public figure, even though a lot of people that express sorrow didn't know him personally, they may have felt some kind of personable connection to him, and I think that is what made him so famous and popular, really. I guess the sense off loss they might feel isn't "personal" but I do think a lot of people do come to miss a certain personality they may see on TV or in movies that brightens their day.
Maybe saying 'I miss him' is a bit over the top, but I'm sure if someone you respected died, you'd be pretty upset too. You have to remember all that he did for conservation. Every penny he made from his TV shows went to conservation work. I have watched his shows for years, seeing his relationship with his father Bob, his friends, his wife and his two children, and in a way getting to know him not just as 'the Crocodile Hunter' but as a good man who loved his family and friends and gave so much to the animal world. The Prime Minister of Australia and Parliament made statements about Irwin. His work had a huge impact on the country and on people who love animals. Clearly he's being grieved. Tink
Okay, I've never had anyone I've known die before, so I guess my reaction was more out of mourning than rational thought. Sorry about that, I'm sure if it had been any other celebrity I would react the same way as others are reacting now.

Not everyone gets caught up with celebrities and its interesting who feels "connected" with particular ones. I had a friend that I casually mentioned that Gene Siskell was dead (he was a big movie critic out of Chicago) and she was furious at me for how casually I told her! I had no idea she felt so connected to him. We just don't know who's gonna be a trigger or why. Its a good lesson in empathy.
Tink
Yeah, it was tough in school today because everyone in all my classes were making light of it because they didn't know that I knew him. I feel even worse for our family friends, Julie and Bryan, who live in Melbourne and knew him better than we did. It's insane. Thanks for being so understanding!
Ash Wednesday
Yeah, no worries. I was also going to add that sometimes, when someone famous that we look up to dies, in a weird way it actually can also rekindle some grief that we may feel for actual loved ones that we know that have died, if that makes any sense. Or maybe that's just me. Like, I cried when Reagan died, but in a weird way it was when I saw some footage where some people put a box of jellybeans at a memorial site and it just made me really sad and set me off for some strange reason. I guess it was because he was a figment of my childhood -- so thinking of that also reminded me of my mom -- so it all made me very sad. Grief is a very weird thing and sometimes escapes convention. Extra ecclesiam nulla salus
this is kind of like when Johnny Cash Died. I never really knew who he was until the morning he died, and i heard clips of him being played on NPR, and now i really love his music, and everything he stood for. I hope that happens to some other person with Steve Irwin.
