N/A Gone
oops... ok, so i was away from the last 2 weekends on business and it turns out a friend of my wife' has been bringing her to an Assemblies of God church and she likes how personable the pastor is and how comfortable it makes her feel. Now she flat out asked me last night what is wrong with them. Why shouldnt she go to their church. I am kinda prejudice against AG and other pentacostal churches, but if anyone knows some good facts or words to say I would appreciate it
tojo
AG are nice enough Protestants, and I don't want to rag on them. They're main problem is that they're not Catholic. 1. They follow the unbiblical notion of Sola Scriptura. 2. They follow the scripture interpretation of some random pastor/ group of pastors, and ultimately theirself, for which they have absolutley no divine assurance of accuracy. 3. Since they believe in doctrine very different from Catholicism in many areas (to the point of usually considering most Catholics in need of conversion to Christianity), and the vast majority of Christians are/have been Catholic (or Orthodox) throughout the ages, they therefore disagree with the majority of Christians. a. All things being equal (which they're not) this is incredibly arrogant, they would need divine assurance of the accuarcy their interpretation of the Christian message, which they don't have (see point #2). (All things are not equal because Catholics do have such divine assurance.) b. If the vast majority of Christians have been so wrong about the gospel throughout the ages, Christianity is a failure. The gates of Hell prevailed against the Church (and Jesus was wrong about that then), and the Holy Spirit either did not or can not lead the Church into all truth (like Jesus said He would). ................................................................................... All other problems (such as non-sacramental soteriology, for example), imo, extend from their following personal interpretation of only a portion of the deposit of faith (just scripture). thessalonian
One can find pastors and churches in every denomination, even the mormons (from experience when I dated a mormon) that make you "feel" good. The Mormons are perhaps the best at making people "feel" good about their denomination. We have to have something more than feelings. tomasios post I think answered it well. The Catholic Church is historical and the gates of hell shall not prevail. As protestant churches go AOG has it's truths and errors. They are all mixed bags of truth and error. They do have a closer understanding of Apostolic Succession than some of the baptists and non-denoms. We should honor the truth and reject the error. Pentocostal type churches overemphasize the tongues aspect of Christianity and scripture. I am not intimately familiar with the AOG and so I won't speak much more. jswranch
Both my wife and Tim Staples are ex-AG. First, Jn 6:53 "So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you" The AG does not have such bread to give. Second, check out what Tim has to say. Here is a link with his writtings. If you guys are strapped for cash, I will buy a few titles for you. Does your wife believe in transubstantiation? Is she active in her church parish? If you answer 'no' to either one of these, you may begin to see the source of your problem.
