Embryo Adoption

Tonight on CSI, there was a child who was conceived by one couple via in vitro and put in storage. After the couple decided not to continue treatment the embryo was adopted out through a program called Project Sunflower to a willing mother. Project Sunflower believes that these embryos should not be destroyed, but respected as life and given birth to.

I was just curious as to what the Catholic Church thought of this type of program. Anyone have a clue? Thanks in advance!

disturbedxfairy,

I saw the same episode of CSI. Man, they come up with some great story lines. Anyway, it would seem that the Church would be all about programs like this "Project Sunflower." The reason is simple - embryos are people. They aren't frozen blobs of goo, they're people who deserve to live. The Church might be opposed if someone were running a scheme like this for profit, but if it is finding adoptive parents for already-existing and abandoned embryos, there doesn't seem to be an issue. I am, of course, open to being corrected. Hope this helps.

Yours,
Pio Nono

By the way, I completely retract my statement above. Phatmass member "Mama B" has brought me to the conclusion that this sort of thing is morally impermissable. Another friend has shown me how, if one accepts embryo adoption, one has to eventually accept the free use of contraception. Stay tuned for more...
