curtins
RIAA and MPA Especially MPA. I dont support stealing or violating copyrights but when they say u cant make tabs and go shutting down these websites. ITS PATHETIC. What are they gonna do arrest you if you listen to a song and figure out how to play it??? its absurd, These copyright laws are getting more and more extreme. Norseman82
What gets me is that when a public establishment (like a bar/restaurant) has a TV on, and they are televising a sporting event, and the event plays a song, the public establishment is shaken down to pay royalties to the music industry. 2xbob
"Excuse me sir/madem, but I believe you were humming a close representation of Pop Vomit's latest hit 'I think I can sing.' This is a serious infraction and you are asked to appear in court." Anyone remember "Fair Use" laws, where if you owned it you could do just about anything with it as long as you didnt distribute.... yeah. EDIT: How long before listening to music too loud is counted as distribution Edited August 19, 2006 by 2xbob
Franimus
at my high school radio station we used to do "album hour" once a week for the purpose of people being able to record the entire album off the radio... we lost interest in it, but then my shift partner dj and i ressurrected it one summer recently... wahaha... we didn't run into any problems, fortunatly.. heh, and at this radio station the general manager sells us blank cds for $1 each so that we won't steal cds we like and will burn ourselves a copy instead

I just use iTunes. The thing, about this whole copyright issue, that bothers me, is the fact that it is illegal to rip YOUR OWN PURCHASED DVD for archival purposes. The way I look at it if you have enough space on your harddrive and would rather use a remote to sort through your DVD's rather than digging through piles, there should not be anything wrong with it. Of course, I don't do it, because it is illegal, but it really bothers me, since I actually own the DVD, or maybe that is the point, they are trying to get across that we do not own anything, they own it all....how's that for paranoid The other thing that gets me is the fact that they will not allow for you to download TV shows because you have to buy a DVD collection instead. However, what about the fact that the only way you can get HD shows is by having an HD box (if you want to pay) or an HD antenna which enables you to get free over the air HD? I have yet to see any HD DVD TV Shows. I abide by the law, since it is the law, but I don't think it is just or fair. My .

If anyone sings "Happy Birthday" in a movie, play or whatever, they have to pay royalities to the estate of the copywrite holder. That's why restaurants make up their own birthday songs to make the waitstaff sing.
prose
In Canada it is legal to copy CDs. Just not to distribute. In fact, we pay a tax on CDs that goes to the entertainment industry. I honestly don't know much about it. But I don't feel guilty at all about burning CDs. I would if I earned money from distributing them, but I don't so.. whatever My views differ from most of PhatMass.

curtins
Look I mean I have no problem with the law that says that you can't copy cds and give em to ur freinds to keep etc cause yeah tahts stealing-- same goes with file sharing etc. But I mean come on they're gonna shut down tab sites and lyrics sites. Its pathetic. Then they're real smug about it. I was reading that on one of their websites- like they were giving answers to FAQs and some of the answers were real smug and smart. I still look up lyrics to see if theres too many swears or such in a cd I wanna buy or something. And I'll look up tabs for a song if I own it. zunshynn
Theologian, if I'm not mistaken you can store your cds and dvds on your computer. It's just illegal to make copies to give someone else. Music is a luxury though Notardillacid... so we need to follow those kinds of laws even if they seem unfair. Just because it seems ridiculous doesn't mean it's unjust. Unfair, sure, but surely not unjust. I think it's rather damgerous to use the term justice so lightly.
