2xbob
What do you want to do with this. If your going for Word/E-mail/Phatmass, er... internet then your fine. The dive is big enough for lots of music and pictures with a procesor to work everything out and enough memory to keep the procesor well suplied. If your going to be doing anything graphics intensive (AutoCAD, Videogames, Photoshop with lots of filters etc.) then your going to run into a limit with the graphics solution it has. It is an overall good pick for a college laptop and at a good price to boot. Just watch out, I dont trust best buy much at all. As for the mac nay sayers, dont worry about them. If you want a non-windows OS you could try a flavor of linux or BSD. I recommend OpenSUSE Linux for a beginner. Their computers are not the best and their tech support is probably one of the worst I have ever encountered. If you have no problems you should be fine, but gateways are prone to becoming great paperweights once the warranty expires. And, if you are looking for someone to help you, you would be better off slamming your head into the wall. I am speaking from experience, I owned one gateway in my life, got so frustrated with them, their tech support, their products, that I swore them off, and built my own computer. Just a friendly warning, take it or leave it. God Bless
Mary_clare
Gateways are horrible! very poor quality and even worse customer service. Remember those stores gateway used to have? they closed for a reason avoid emachine as well, they are just as bad at gateway. walmart has a nice selection of toshibas for under 9 hundred, and usually compaq's too
jmj
I think Gateway bought eMachines...but either way, I'd stay away from the both of them. I purchased a Compaq from BestBuy that I've been rather pleased with. I purchased it around Thanksgivin' with their uberspecials (it's a Presario V2000, Turion 64 bit proc, 512MB RAM ... I forget how big the harddrive is). It's a nice little machine so far, the only thing I need to do to it is dump more RAM into it (for my gaming pleasures). It held up this last school year, so rock on for that. Although I've now switched from Windows to Linux, so the machine runs even better now! Lil Red
agreed with the above about emachines. horrible computers. when i worked at office depot, it was a running joke about how many emachines were returned because they were a piece of junk (cheap junk). ninjakyle
-emachines and gateway are the same company now (but different computers still) -i have a gateway laptop (1 year now) and am really happy with it -customer service has been great on two occasions (once online and once on phone) -hard drive failed a month ago (these things happen) and best buy upgraded it for free (100gb to 120gb) -I have a slower computer than that and we recorded the whole Popple CD "Pulled in both directions" on it (www.popple.us) So, I am happy with gateway I am happy with best buy (although i do think they are corporate garden tools) now that i look at it, it is the same as mine, but bigger hard drive (than mine came with) and turion instead of athlon great deal if you ask me and you are going to love that card reader. Go somewhere and people are taking pictures? just borrow their memory card and throw them on your computer!

scardella
If you're gonna be lugging it around often (like for taking notes in classes, etc.) I'd look for something a little lighter. 15.4" screens tend to be jack of all trades, but masters of none. They're mid-weight, mid-size screens, with middle-of-the-road battery life. Like others have said, this is no gaming/AutoCAD/photoshop machine, but will be fine for music, watching movies, internet, etc. I've had issues w/ Linux and laptops before (particularly w/ waking from sleep issues), so I can't really recommend linux on a laptop. I'd have to second the Macbook recommendation. As far as brands are concerned, I haven't had much troubles w/ Dell laptops (and I do desktop support; the majority of our people have dells). My dad and uncle both seem to like Toshibas, but I don't like the LEDs they've got all over the place (particularly the blue ones). VAIOs are good, but are a pain in the butt to maintain. HPs are like Toshibas. I absolutely love Macs. Gotta run.
jmj
Another thing that popped into my head: my University mainly runs Dells. For most of the incoming students who come in, we (I work in tech support for the Uni) recommend them getting a Dell or Mac. We can do limited tech support with Dells and Macs, mainly because we're used to working them them already. Some people bring in Vaios or whatnot and we sometimes can't help them out, their problem is so specific to the brand. Also, unless you like hacking; don't do Linux on a laptop. :
Seven77
get a Macbook, intel based--you can run Windoze too!
chris
Macs are better.
Amen. I have a Ibook G3. I have a 40gb hard drive and wireless network. And, I never tired of one.
Theologian in Training
The only reason I did not recommend a Mac is because he definitively said it was never happening. I think it should go without saying that when someone asks me what type of laptop to get, I always highly recommend a Mac. Problem is, people think learning a new OS is too hard...Macs are easy
