curtins
no I'm not saying human sexuality is gross--> I'm saying the explicit sexual parts of this book are gross.
homeschoolmom
i agree with thess, hsmom, raphael.
When I was student teaching I had a Jahovah's Witness child in my class. His mother requested a replacement novel for the one we were reading-- The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. And when RussianGirl was in high school, she requested a replacement for Salem's Lot. It happens all the time.
Sojourner
Man, if I'd known I could request replacement novels, maybe I could've gotten out of all that Hemingway.

Sirklawd
hey now. lets not get carried away here. Just because a character in a book takes in specific sexual acitivity does not make the book evil. I read Flowers just like everyone else, and well.. i didnt like it because it was boring and you can see the "point" of the book miles away, but i loved brave new world. The authors of these books didnt write in all of this sexual stuff because they were being evil and wanted to encourage others to be lustful, they did it to show points. sex is A HUGE part of our world, and a main force behind the majority of our actions and formations of society. In flowers, Charlie gains intelligence, and is just like everyone else - this ofcourse means he's now aware of the same sexual urges that are within us all. im not condoning the actions, im just saying that the author is trying to make a point there about intelligence/sex/etc. as for brave new world.. ooooh man that catholic school knows what its doing. that book is great, its pretty much a blatent warning to society about what can happen when marraige/family/and giving birth are all destroyed. Which is exactly whats going on in the real world right now. Look beyond the fact that theres sex, if you have to skip some paragraphs, but done give up on these books as a whole (course if you want to give up on Flowers because it's BORING - by all means lol) The simple fact that you are disgusted by the stuff means you are "ok" to read it. If the descriptions in the book are actually encouraging your brain to be more lustful - and thus you arnt disgusted, thats when you have to worry. The authors of these books werent trying to tempt you.

Socrates
I know nothing about that "Flowers" book, but Brave New World is classic satire, and one of the most prophetic books of the 20th century. A lot of it is actually scarily close to the way society is going, and is I think even more relevant now than it was in the early '30s when it was written. It describes an immoral future world, but does not go into any unnecessary graphic detail, and should not be morally problematic for the reader. It is literature, not porn.
seriously though why do they rate video games and movies but not books???
Yeah, you can see how ratings systems have really helped clean up our entertainment!
curtins
ITs not about cleaning it up its about warning people whats in it.
Anthony
I have to read Flowers for Algernon for summer reading. I'm pretty much disgusted at the amount of graphic sexual carp thats in it. How does one read through something like this without comprimising one's purity?
Yuck! I totally agree with you. I had to read Flowers for Algernon in high school english class. I hated it. Pray about it. I hope you get through it.

veroni213
When I had to read Flowers for Algernon for my Catholic school, we read the highly edited version in our literature textbooks...nothing racy in there. I guess it's a bit late now but you might've been able to find an edited version.
