Engagement Ring

Thy Geekdom Come

Okay...so it's time for me to buy an engagement ring. The bad news is that I'm poor. The good news is that Jennie's more set on getting me than on getting a diamond. Cubic zirconia is fine with her.

However, the bad news still remains that I'm dirt poor. So...I will be selling things. Shipping costs must be added:

Church History - Lovasik - $5 (good condition, was $6.50)
Aquinas' Shorter Summa - Aquinas - $15 (very good condition, was $22.50)
Everlasting Man - Chesterton - $10 (good condition, was about $15)
The New Anti-Catholicism - $10 (good condition, was about $15)
TI-83 Plus Silver Edition - $40 (good condition, goes on Ebay for around $40-50)

Donations also welcome. :P:

God bless,

Micah

A simple gold band can be beautiful, too. :)

Yes, I know. She needs white gold or silver for allergy reasons, and she'd like cubic zirconia stones along the edge or part of it. Even with that, I can get it for less than $100.

If I ever got married I'd get a simple white gold band, too. I don't really like to wear jewelry, or rings for that matter. My old man worked out in the field a lot and never wore his ring. They were married for life, so yeah I think in a lot of ways less can be more. You see how many celebs have those gaudy rocks on their fingers and we know how well a lot of those marriages do...

I always thought it would be cool to get tattooed rings. Symbolizes that your marriage is permanent, and saves you a heck of a lot of money!

Is a ring required canonically?

See...I always thought that you know, getting a job and saving $$$ would be better than selling a few books and asking for donations! :P:

At least, that's how I did it.

Yeah...like I said, she's not really into anything elaborate. She'd certainly take it if I got her a simple band, but she's expressed that she thinks this kind of ring is pretty and I'll go the extra mile for it. :)

It's pretty. I don't think she wants any colored gems, though.

Except that FUS doesn't let you have a job if you're an RA and RA's only make $50/semester (the rest of the payment is in discount benefits), so there is no way for me to make money other than selling things.

yeah, being an RA is no way to get rich.

You get more money than I did...

Go to a pawn shop and pick up a nice looking ring, if it doesn't matter. Saves money, and many people choose to upgrade the ring once they can afford it.

I have friends who bought their wedding rings in a pawn shop... and instead of an engagement ring, he gave her earrings...

That looks sort of like my wedding band. Mine is gold and the stones alternate round and square (7 total, only across the front, not around the whole band), but they're all diamonds. My engagement ring is a small diamond with two (also small) diamonds on either side.

I like the idea of stones, even small ones, on an engagement ring. Even if they're not "real" and you upgrade later (I, personally, would still keep and wear my old ring, too, sentimental value) there is something beautiful and symbolic in it all. That said I prayed that my ring wouldn't end up being something big, and I don't think I really would have cared if it was fake or not a diamond at all. Its what it means thats important. My sister in law's wedding ring came from an antique store, it wasn't a real diamond, but it was really pretty. I am quite certain that they didn't pay over $100 for it. There are really alot of options when you ring shop, and financing is even available at some places if it comes down to that.

Sounds like a great plan. Get an engagement ring when you have no means or ability to support yourself and and a spouse.

You could sell blood to buy groceries after you're married.

People stay married through richer or poorer, but jobless, homeless, and destitute usually are deal breakers.

Love conquers all.

You know, you might just keep the sarcasm to yourself. I don't think you have any idea about either Raph or St. Collette's personal circumstances or their finances.

Further, not having money for an engagement ring is different from being flat broke.
