There was no annexation to Mexico. There was a movement of Irish Catholics who moved to America and experienced persecution (for being Irish and Catholic) they then moved to Mexico. Some of them fought against the US when the US invaded Mexico. Even though they had become Mexican citizens they were considered traitors by the US.

As JasJis mentioned there were also some defections in the US army.
