Confirmation and Betrothal

I can see what many professors have to offer; I just cannot see myself considering the difference between their education (especially within the context of the current college climite) as being worth ten, twenty, thirty thousand dollars a year more than a private study where you just aim towards reading the classics of literature and studying different disciplines of the liberal arts based upon the vast resources available to you in libraries, bookstores, and the internet.

it's all completely mispriced; because it's all aimed towards carreers where you would be able to make 200,000 dollars and go back and pay off all the debt you went into getting ready for that carreer.

I'd like to found a completely non-acredited school based upon the socratic method teaching the seven liberal arts and open cheaply only to those smart enough and willing to learn for the sake of learning. That'd be sweet... like one of the ancient greek scholas... the whole point of which would be to play (schola) at philosophy and logic and all those types of disciplines. that would be utterly amazing.

I agree about private study. Sometimes I think I have learned more from private study than I have from my college classes. However, that said, many of professors have sharpened my learning by their criticisms and suggestions.

I LOVE classic literature, and I think it should be mandatory reading throughout at least HS and college (I don't care what you're going to college for). This was what convinced me to homeschool my future children (and a friend of mine who's recently married as well)... there are too many great books that don't get taught in school these days. We've forgotten many of the classic authors.

And, should, *** forbid, something happen to my husband, I'd still have a way to take care of my family.

Me too! People always tell me "well, you could always remarry!" And my response is, "Ummm, but if he's just severely disabled and not DEAD, I CAN'T!"

They always just look at me dumbfounded after that.

I also see my work as a part of my vocation....but that's a whole other issue.

Ok, I haven't been here for most of this conversation, but I have to say that I'd probably be half insane if I didn't have the grace of Confirmation to help me discern my vocation right now. I both understood and appreciated the sacrament when I was Confirmed at 9. If seven-year-olds are old enough to receive the Body and Blood of Our Lord at age 7, I think they're intrinsically mature enough to be Confirmed. All that is required is some hardcore catechesis.

So that's my $.02

There's also the part about finding someone else to remarry...I have a very dear friend who was married, her husband died about 8 years ago, and she isn't remarried yet, even though she wants to get remarried...it's not like you just snap your fingers and it happens!

See, that hardcore catechesis is the part that they're missing in most places even (especially?) when they wait until the kids are older. And it's all turned into this wishy-washy "accept for yourself" your faith --to the point that it's almost regarded as a re-baptism, which lessens the meaning, not only of confirmation, but also of baptism.

first you tell them they cannot have sex until they get married, then you tell them they cannot get married until at least their mid-20's due to educational and economic reasons. then they start to have sex before marriage. doesn't excuse their sins, but humanity is plagued with the perils of concupiscence and only few are called to the extra-ordinary vocation and grace to abstain from all sexual intercourse even when their bodies tell them to. you take away the moral way to have sex from people developing strong sex drives and they will have sex immorally.
