JesusIPray Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 (edited) Ok, my whole life along with my family after receiving the Eucharist, we let it melt in our mouths before swallowing. Now many people chew it like it is nothing. And their reasoning is because it is Jesus in the form of bread so it is ok. But I think its disrespectful to chew our Lord Jesus. What do you guys think? Edited July 18, 2006 by JesusIPray
Franimus Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 That's what I always thought/was taught. Story about that: in 2nd grade while preparing, we were given unconsecrated hosts to "practice" reception.. A comment was made by a fellow classmate to another classmate "You're lucky that's not the real thing!" when he saw the other chewing it.
homeschoolmom Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 There's a question in the Q/A about that right now.
Fides_et_Ratio Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Jesus said we have to gnaw on His flesh. Chewing is okay... so long as you're not chewing rudely with your mouth hanging open, or making noises (i.e., smacking your lips, etc.).

What do you guys think?
If you watch the Priest, when he recieves communion he chews on the body of Christ. Next time your at Mass or if your watching a Mass on EWTN today watch em, he will. Cause I was watching "Truth in The Heart" and the nun said you shouldn't chew on the body of Christ, but later that day I was watching the mass and the priests chewed on the body of Christ. SO if basically all Priest chew on the body of Christ it has to be fine... right?
Birgitta Noel Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 It's fine. Check the Q&A. Jesus didn't say "Take and let dissolve" he said "Take and EAT"
onlygrace08 Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Hmmm.... I've never really thought about it. I always chew. But, it kinda makes sense....
let_go_let_God Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Either is fine, as Fides_et_Ratio said, as long as you aren't eating the host rudely. Myself I am part of our music ministry and I do not have much time to consume the Eucharist so I let it disolve some before I take the Precious Blood and consume both together. God bless- LGLG
the_rev Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 I personally don't chew.... always told not to, so I don't.
prose Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 I wouldn't think it would make a difference. I chew. "Take and eat" is pretty clear that chewing would be okay.

But for the rest of us, we shouldnt.
Birgitta Noel Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006
Yes, but I think thats only because immediatly after, the priest has to give the Eucharist to the parishioners (sp). I always chew, I do feel alittle weird chewing our Lord, but I really don't think it's disrespectful. You should enquire about it with a priest, don't come to phatmass for real answers. Not saying everyone here doesn't know what they are talking about, just saying you should speak to a priest about questions on the Church
homeschoolmom Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Or ask in the Q/A phorum... which someone already did.
